South Africa in Zimbabwe

Edited my post as just seen the full quote.

I think that's absolutely pathetic from the coach tbh and poor mentality from the individual.

"I thought we had enough and we need to bowl. Secondly, Brian Lara is a legend let's be real. He got 401, or whatever it was, against England

For someone of that stature to keep that record is pretty special. I think if I get the chance again, I would probably do the same thing

Speaking to Shuks, he kinda said to me as well: 'Listen, let the legends keep the really big scores'
It’s not soo much the Lara thing for me not got a strong view.

However in his interview he states firstly

‘ first thing first we had enough runs’

He is spot on.

Of course they had more than enough runs, they was absolutely no reason to bat on other than personal achievements which he put second,

I can’t see how putting personal achievements second in a team sport is a ‘bad thing’

I really can’t

If he was on that score an hour before lunch, I wonder if he would still have declared.

Seems to be the sort of decision that was taken over the lunch interval and I suspect if it was scenario I suggested above, he would have gone for that record.

Because he would have either got there or not got there in 30 mins and wouldn't have impacted their chances of winning the gam. Then they'd have had 11 and half sessions to bowl Zimbabwe out twice. When they are already 1-0 up in the series.

The point your trying to make is fine in plenty of other matches and contexts. But this was literally the perfect game to be able to chase a once in a lifetime moment and cement himself in cricket history.

Now even though it's South Africa biggest individual test score. Feels like he's the sort of player that's hit a purple patch and could easily fall away from the test side in the next few years.

Especially since he got shoehorned in at 3 anyway he's a 7/8 in test cricket really(albeit on this evidence maybe he will kick on). But still he's had a perfect storm to statpad against a Zimbabwe side that needs a lot of work to be able to even put up a fight at this level.

He'll massively regret it in later life I'd bank on that.

They had enough runs as he was approaching his 300 in fairness ;).

I mean there’s putting personal accomplishments first where you don’t know the outcome of the game, and then there’s this which is essentially an exhibition match at this point.

The game was 4 sessions in. If it was lunch on day 3 it’s completely different.
Before my time of watching but zero fucks given by Hayden in his 380 innings going past Lara.

Declaring a bit later than South Africa did on day 2 and yet still won the game against probably a much better side.

Whereas Taylor and Clarke didn't want to go past Bradman in their triples

Good point ;)

He will only regret it later on in life if he the type of bloke who likes the limelight and attention on himself.

Which a lot of personalities don’t.

On this occasion I totally take peoples and yours valid point that if there was ever a occasion to break a record and still easily win the game this was it as loads of time left in the game.

But there was also no point in batting on longer either none at all, only one possible reason was to have a personal achievement and attention on himself, rather than the team and result.

Which he didn’t want which I admire

Not sure it was an act of selflessness and putting the team first anymore than the likelihood he'll have felt embarrassed at taking Lara's record against sub standard opposition. Saying they had enough runs is daft, he could have tee'd off and got the record within 20minutes and they'd still wrap the game up with time to spare.

SA cricket journ Neil Manthorp said the SA coach Shukri Conrad made the decision to declare so it was out of Mulder's hands.

Admirable act tbf. Problem is some care free Aussie will come along and make 500 against Ireland, midway through a player strike or something so they are playing their Under 15s, and not give a shite!

Think I'd have batted on til 400 at least.

SA win by an innings with more than 2 and a half days to spare.

Make the decision by Conrad even more than a joke that he couldn't let them have one more session.
