Some good points from Adrian Durham

When Talksport first appeared I used to tune into it, and it was pretty much ok back in it's early days, I used to listen in a lot.

Thereafter, for me, it became shite of the highest order. Nowt but insincere opinion/wind-ups to get folks to phone-in so that they can gather their cut of the phone calls.

Fabio Capello deployed Jordan Henderson against France for his international debut and he also brought in Newcastle United's Andy Carroll. The match before saw Jack Wilshere take his place in the line-up alongside Kevin Davies. And here is the crux of England's current malaise. In Henderson and Wilshere, England, potentially, have footballers; midfielders who can scheme, probe and trust their first touch.

In Carroll and Davies, they have traditional front-men; big guys who can bustle centre-backs, flick the ball on and hold it up. And successful sides cannot effectively play both types of player at once. There is little point in bringing in midfielders who like the ball to feet and then bashing it over their heads to the likes of Jay Bothroyd.

Capello is still in denial; England cannot play football like France can. And the Italian cannot seem to trust the instincts or the faculties of his charges to play the game at the requisite international standard but he wants them to. And so, there is a schizophrenic England with no identifiable modus operandi.

If hoofing the ball to the top end of the pitch is the best course of action then Capello needs to start picking the right players for this system. Bite the bullet and get the Stoke boys in there. Otherwise, trust the creative talents at your disposal and go with a forward line that suits a more aesthetic style. A little bit of both is not the answer.

I agree with this. Absolutely disjointed rubbish I watched yesterday. Up until France's second anyhow, then I switched off.

Fuck me he nailed it, hes right cappello cant win. There were moans for youngsters after the world cup we picked loads and played a brand new team for the first time with a few starting there very first england game what did fans and media expect. I knew if france put out a good side which they did full of players playing champions league etc then they would beat us.

The other night wasnt about the result at all, it was about blooding some youngsters. The fans and media wont allow full blown change, they still hang onto the thought that the so called golden generation will come good. They wont and there all old now its time for a full makeover, i just dont think though that the thick f***ing england fans and the even thicker two faced media will allow this to happen.

Missing out on one of the major competitions would be a blessing if we're serious about overhauling both the team and the style. Without the pressures of the qualification stages and building up to the competition we could do what's needed rather than small changes that make little or no difference to the overall quality or style.

Funnily enough the last highlighted bit sums up the transformation we have seen at Sunderland.......for Carroll substitute Jones. Since we moved to a more passing game with very mobile front men we have been a different team, leading to praise from the likes of Terry Venables who labelled our centre-mid display against Chelsea as "without equal" this season.

I think it is always nice to have options though, carroll is something different but i can see him staying in the squad but having roonery bent defoe ahead of him.
