Up The Bracket
Midfield
Doesn't make a difference at all to me. I'd be happy if it got renamed for extra income like, need more money to spend on shite players

Yes, plenty. But the name of the stadium means nothing, absolutely nothing to the city, the city's past, bugger all. It's a nothing name so wouldn't care less if they raised money by selling the naming rights.Do you like anything about SAFC?
Where would it go tho', not on transfers. Swallowed up the finance and cost figures.Don't mind it myself but would be happy for naming rights if it brought us that extra bit cash every year.
Quality name.
Of course those who are uneducated just say 'Ya stole ya name from Benfeeecas stadium man', despite their ground being Called the Estadio da Luz due to it being located in the Luz area of Lisbon.
I've always liked it.
Forget the actual stadium name, i think it is f***ing shocking that we don't have stand names.
It's always annoyed me slighlty that there's not been any effort, even after all this time to give the stands names.
The club wanted to name a stand after Quinny but he wouldn't have it so they named the bar after him. Probably more appropriate anyway.
Aye that's fair enough but the stsbds should have been named even before then. Could have done a competition or something like that even. Seems that's after nearly 20 years of being there it should have been done like.
Wasn't the West Stand the Carling stand for a while?
Sure there was something like that, terrible memory though, someone remind me.
Edit: Carling North Stand starts next Season apparently

Sure at least one of the stands was named after a beer not long after the stadium first opened.
Should of called it wor pitI like the stadium much more than I did RP. I like that it's got a link to the pit in its name (im a Seaham yacker). I would have loved it tied more obviously to the pit or the area mind.
Or worry pitShould of called it wor pit
At the time of the announcement I just thought that's a cheesy rip off of another club's stadium name. Still think that. Should have been called The Wearside or Wearmouth Stadium.
Me neither. I remember commenting at the time that it should have been the "Wearmouth Stadium" after the colliery it was built on. Also it would be a worldwide advertisement for who we are, where we come from and that we are Wearsiders. It was to do with the miners davy lamp lighting the way in the mine and the club moving from dark days into the light iirc there marra imho, that's why the big davy lamp sculpture is at the ticket office. I think its common knowledge that Boro knicked the first choice name but don't know happened to Wearmouth.
Yeah. I wasn't there but a massive groan from me as well when I heard. Why did we have to steal a world famous name from a world famous club making us look like idiots. Hence the moans and groans as everyone knew instantly that it belonged to the famous Benfica.I can remember Fickling opening a side door at the SOL coming out to the waiting crowd and announcing officially that it was 'Stadium of Light', it was met with moans and groans and then Fickling said something along the lines of 'well it's our stadium and we'll call it what we like', there was a lot of emotion and sentiment at the time to name it after something to do with the river or the coalmine it stands on.
Err let me think now. Oh I finally got it - they call it the "Stadium of Light" because it's an exact translation into English of "Estadio Da Luz".Why do people say Benfica's stadium is "Stadium of Light". It isn't, it's Estadio Da Luz. Just lazy to translate it to "Stadium of Light"
I was there when Fickling came out and the uneducated maggots who had no clue how they came to naming the place started slating them. Brand new f***ing 42,000 seater stadium that had it been built 5 years before, would have been fit for Man United and he had to stand there and get pelters.
I always liked it, it'll be Sunderland's true home in my eyes but that's just because I'd seen us for that long at Roker which is why if it came to selling the naming rights, I wouldn't shed a tear.
..... let me correct you there ..... it was built in 1954 ..... is was REbuilt in 2003 .....And the fact is was built in 2003.....
Yeah, well said. They knew it was cockup. That story didnt come out for a few days after the announcement. SAFC attempting to justify the unjustifiable.
The Cockup has a canny ring to it likeMe neither. I remember commenting at the time that it should have been the "Wearmouth Stadium" after the colliery it was built on. Also it would be a worldwide advertisement for who we are, where we come from and that we are Wearsiders.

Murray got carried away with the coal mining. Yes be proud of our coal mining heritage. That's why my choice was to name it after the colliery. Murray however later said in justification that another reason for the name was that the club was founded by coal miners - idiot.
