Smokers

Smoked from a young age, of all the mates I tried it with I was the only one who never threw up and actually liked it.wished I'd hated it.. packed in a few times , longest stint off was around 3 years.. so easy to start again... about 10 years ago I was on around 20/30 a day... now I can buy a pack on a Monday and still have it on a wed/thurs... not great but much better than where I was.. wouldn't consider myself selfish, never smoked indoors, near other people or where it would cause offence... always look for a bin etc... always try to take measures to combat the smell etc... chewing gum, carry wet wipes and deodorant at work...

Horrible habit but I have to confess I like it... I'm the only smoker in my family too so wasn't influenced by parents etc... just happened to like it when I tried it but I wish I hadn't..

Just been a discussion on the wireless about how smoking has no place in the modern world. Which was a strange conclusion IMO.

Also repeatedly concluded smokers are selfish people. Never smoked myself but have plenty of mates who did, and some that still do, and none of them are selfish people, yet that insult is always hoyed about.

Smokers are people too remember. And they also put plenty of cash into the coughers.
A dying breed mate.

As a smoker for most of my life, they're right, no matter which way you cut it. Smoking is just plain stupid.

I still say ban smoking now at the age of children starting school - 12yrs to get used to the idea and they will be the first teens to start life essentially tobacco free.
It brings in way to much revenue for the government to stop it.
They banned advertising and replaced it with gambling. As harsh as it is addiction funds our country.
That’s why it won’t be long until the UK legalize weed

So all the wrong conclusions in the past were done off the cuff?

Nah but as with most things, Haroldolphus, the more data you accumulate the more reliable/accurate the conclusions you can draw from it.

It’s an inconvenient conclusion for both of us but then we both accept the risks of it, right?

Isnt the average life expectancy of a teetotaller short than that of a moderate drinker?

Not sure. Who do they include as a teetotaller? Lifelong non-drinkers only? Or does that include recovering alcoholics?

I am happy to take the risk but I am not convinced a small amount of alcohol is particularly harmful.

I am sure my consumption of alcohol over the years would not have been beneficial for my health. The fun I have had from it outweighs the risks many many times over.

I would stick myself in the non drinker category now apart from when I socialise. I still socialise a fair bit mind.

Are we allowed to count the time we are in bed asleep? In which case I’ve been off the sauce for ages.

I just never drink in the house anymore. Last few years it has dwindled to nothing. I can take the carto BBQ etc, not drink and still have a laugh. Just gigs and stuff are still pissed affairs.

I put it down to getting old.

I love beer, wine and G&T. I love going to the pub with mates and having a few scoops. A bottle of wine over dinner or some bubbles in the sunshine at Lord’s to pretend, just for an afternoon, that I am anything other than scum.

I am trying to get fit by losing some timber. I’m 45 now so in the danger zone. I’ve never smoked but had a full career of knocking back the sauce. I think it is prudent to cut right back and only drink in moderation. Same with red and processed meat. I’m not a veggie by a long way but go most days without eating meat.

That just happened to me naturally. But I still get totally pissed every now and then.

They don’t stick a shit load of money into the system. As someone already said the cost to the nhs of treating smokers gobbles it all up.

Dunno if anyone else has mentioned it yet as I'm still reading through the thread, but smokers put a lot more money into the system than they take out. Depending on which report you believe, it's somewhere between 8x and 10x as much that they pay in tobacco taxes than they take out in nhs medical costs, and that doesn't even take into account that they also draw less money out of pension funds than non-smokers by dying earlier.

Smokers are the saints of modern Britain, nobly killing themselves for the sake of the ungrateful populace that berates them and calls them smelly.

Here's to all the smokers. Much better people than the selfish non-smokers who happily get a cheap ride through their lives on the back of the extra money in the system because of the smokers.

They’d be even more heroic if they bought the tabs and didn’t smoke them. Win win!

Not quite, as they'd then be a bigger drain on the pensions fund.

If any non-smokers fancy buying them and not smoking them as a kind of half measure, that'd be fine I guess. They could maybe donate them to charity so that poorer smokers could be subsidised.

Maybe your mates are not, but lots of smokers are selfish.

They stand in doorways making you breath it in, drop litter frequently, walk along paths meaning others have to breath it in.

Any smoker that has children under 16 is by definition selfish as they inflict the dirt on to those too young to make an informed decision on whether to suffer it.
