He went to Abingdon School, a day and boarding independent school in Oxfordshire , with a strong tradition in rowing, rugby union and cricket, according to Wikipedia.

He was....but attended Annfield Plain Secondary Modern as did quite a number from Consett who passed the 1st part of the old 11+

Ah. He’s about 8 years older than me so gone by the time I got there. But older pupils were still talking about the red card protests that took place outside the new gymnasium that resulted in him leaving the school and handing over to a consortium of lads from across New Kyo bogs led by Mr Hinds the PE teacher
