Simple question, what would your rating for Henderson be tonight?

He had no help from the patheticly immobile Barry and the defenders played telegraphed passes down the flanks all night, or worse hoofed it to nobody in particular

IMO Ceouch, Carroll, Henderson, A.Young and A.Johnson are the only players that can take anything away from last night.

7 - kept things tidy in an unfamiliar role, whilst being abandoned by a set of twats.

He seemed to be playing in a straight jacket to strict orders. He didn't do much wrong but didn't do much right either. I assume this was down to doing what he was told to do.

If im honest then id give none of the players anything higher than a 5!

Yes there was a few on debut and a lot of senior players missing but we looked shocking!

Just proves i made the right decision to pack in going to watch them during the week!

6 - but difficult to understand just exactly what role Capello asked him to undertake. He was blatantly ignored when in space and often had just too much MF space to cover on his own.

Frustrating to watch TBH. Only us lot will know that his role meant he could not play like he does for SAFC. Everybody else will think "anonymous and overawed". Deserves another chance with more effective MF structure and partners.

5. Out of position & lacked support. Tried, but didn't manage to assert himself in the role he was given.

Did what he was asked to do imho, he will have been a bit scared to go outside of what he had been asked to do given it was his first game. Barry didnt help like, he shouldve been helping the lad out i didnt see him talk to him at all last night ffs.

4. For large parts of the game he looked lost.

I accept that he may well have been asked to do a job that he's unsuited to, but overall, and I hate to say it, I was disappointed.

The parts of his game that have made him so impressive for SAFC in many games this season went missing. Granted he was neat when he had the ball and didn't waste it, but there were too many instances where he just didn't make himself available for a pass. He was poor at moving into space and on more than one occasion when he did, he actually pointed for the ball to be passed backwards to a defender.

Having said that, England generally were a shambles, with no shape, no movement and no obvious game plan apart from lumping it up to the greasy pugilist.

The gulf in class between us and France last night was truly depressing.

Tin hat on with spares at the ready.

He'd get the same rating as the rest of the team for me, apart from maybe Barry who i'm growing to hate.

THat just about sums his performance up. At times he was clearly hiding, which can be a product of nerves.

I'd give him a 6.
He was wasted in that formation though, and was never going to make an impact in a more defensive roll. When he got forward more in the second half he looked far more comfortable, and picked out a great pass that Milner should have done better with. Capello played him far too deep to make a real impact as that's not his position.

Thought his post match interview as quoted on Sky sports website sounded very grounded and at least he knows which teams midfield performance he needs to learn from ;)

"It's a little bit difficult compared to what I'm used to," he conceded.

"It's my first cap but I'll learn a lot from the game and I'll keep pushing on and doing well and get another chance."

He added: "I think I can do a bit better going forward and influencing the game.

"I've taken a lot out of the game and (learned from) the top-class players that are in France's team."

There were also a number of times he made himself available for a pass, or made a burst forward, and was completey bypassed.

I'm not defending his performance because it was average at best but i wonder if, rather than hiding, he just lost interest in going searching for the ball?

4. Looked lost and never really in the game. Kinda mooched around the midfield without even trying to lose his marker or get into any kind of space for a pass. Mind saying that, when he did the "senior" players decided not to pass to him and instead squandered possession playing it to one of their pals who was heavily marked or had a 1% chance of actually getting the ball.

They were all shite.

5 Didn't really get into the game, then again didn't make any big mistakes either. Steady enough start to his England career.
6 For Carroll simply because he did try hard to get to the poor balls launched upfield.

I think both of them will be useful squad players, but behind other players in the pecking order.

Jordan may have struggled in midfield, but it's very unfair to pick him out when he had Barry doing nothing, and Garrard only started getting into the game later on. They are usually our first choice midfielders so they have no excuses.

But most importantly - Henderson didn't get injured, coz if I had to make the choice I say sod England, I'd rather he was fit for Sunderland!
