Signing Defoe has relegated us....

Not quite, you just don't see it ;)

We abandoned all comfortably formations when he joined. The set up wasn't working before but it got worse, we even lost the ability to defend simple things. This season has been truly shite.

Been very soul destroying. Its a mixture of all sorts, mainly recruitment, the squad is a mismatch of players from De Fanti, Long term players, LC's signings, Poyet's love childs.

I will give Poyet one thing, I think he realised that the squad was shite early on this season, obviously that is partly his fault, well mostly his fault, but looking back his plan of not getting beat first and trying to nick a goal was probably the only way we could play.

To be brutally honest, he should probably of just played Defoe up by himself or even tried him left wing in this usual formation, even though most of us were raging at the idea of it, it's probably the only way it could of worked.

Despite him scoring in our only two wins this year?

What a load of complete shite

Yeah but he has also played in all the other losses, and our ratio of losing games has gone up since he arrived to be fair.

Maybe played Connor in the centre forward role?

Changing formations in order to field a single player rarely pays dividends. In general they have to be top class, unfortunately he isn't.

I think that's a good way of putting it simply mate. agree.

Sad thing is.

Jones, Buckley, bridcutt will all be here if we go down. Probably o'shea too I imagine. I wouldn't be surprised if Larson was tbh, he always seems to see out his contracts. Unless we push him out.

Wickham will be pushed out for £££. PVA will probably stay. Will they be good enough? I'm not sure, definitely need to spend some money though.

As have the other 10 - many if whom have made costly individual mistakes. Without his goals against Newcastle and Burnley we could well have been rock bottom.

I do agree that we'll be relegated mind

Yep all sorts of things should of been different, its easy looking back now, but Poyet's 451 was the only way we could function, it fell apart from when he went away from that, which is exactly what happened last season too. We only stayed up when he went back to his normal formation.

Be honest have we got better or worse as a team since he signed?

Poyet changed formation and team every week anyway as has Advocaat. It's a disastrous way to manage a team.

No he didn't. He played the same formation every single game until Defoe signed, literally every game.

He changed it to 532 at Spurs away on his debut.

No hindsight here, I've seen this one a few times over the years. In my gaff we call it the "Rodney Marsh mistake". :D

The football is no worse, the results have been but then it was coming from day 1 of the season.

Would we have gained more points without him?

Getting on to a slightly different point here, but we must keep Larsson and JOS, they will be key players if we have any chance to stop the slide if we go down.

I wonder what will happen to Defoe? His wages will be cut, I imagined one of the London clubs will get him for a nominal fee or something.

The results are all that matter, not remotely interested in the performances

If I am honest, I think they would of been yeah, I think we would of ground out more points. If you read my other posts I am not blaming Defoe or blaming Sunderland for signing him, they did the right thing, I just think strangely is cocked up any chance we had.

There was a misconception that SAFC were under performing when we were playing the 451, IMO now I don't think we were, it was the only way we could get results.

He should of just played Defoe upfront by himself or from the left

 excellent way of putting it!

Advocaat's been playing with three strikers the whole time now, I'm not sure if the record's any better or worse than the record under Poyet.

We changed it up or the first half, but is it just me who thinks that was to accommodate Buckley more than it was to accommodate Defoe? Would explain taking Buckley off at HT when his performance was, IMO, much closer to being our best than being our worst - we were able to get into a shape we were more comfortable with, even if it required playing Danny Graham.

Then signing him isn't the issue is it?

Semantics..... We signed the wrong player if we cant use him in his proven position

Maybe played Connor in the centre forward role?

Its scandalous that Wickham has not had a run leading the line this season after his heroics back of last season....its probably come to late now.

We would have gained more points if we had brought £70k a week worth of quality who fitted into the system....we started the season making the same mistake with Rodwell and finished it with Defoe... I have no doubt in other teams playing to their strengths they would contribute more. With Rodwell we dropped him when it did not work...with Defoe we compromised the set up of the team to accomidatr
