A night in 1992?

i was in the mainstand close to the fulwell & the atmosphere that night was electric.the noise the fulwell created will live long in the memory for me, i used to be part of that noise but it's a different feeling being in it to actually being close to it, that roar man was something else, im'e sure thats the reason we won the game because the atmosphere & adrenalin on the terraces that night lifted the players & scared the ldl out of the chelsea players, can't wait for the s/s to create a proper 'loud' atmosphere

Great nights but not the old roar marra.

once they butchered the Roker end, it was finished. the noise at SOL under Reid was much much better than anything at Roker of the previous 20 years. IMO.

The first Newcastle game at SOL was unreal.

I didn't go to many games at Roker as I used to go to more away matches, but the atmosphere was usually a damp squib with about 15-20k there!

I wasn't there m8 but I did go to the final ('glory' hunter!).

Can someone please explain to me why some people seem to have a problem with a group of lads trying to generate a better atmosphere? Just let us get on with it. If you don't want to be involved then fair enough. I just don't see what your problem with it is.

Yes Roker could be rocking but football has moved on. There is no way that the ultra stuff from around europe will end up in Sunderland. Lads like me just want a home end where we can sing and stand all game. I love away games for that very reason. If we could get that at home aswell then what exactly would the problem be with that?

There is no problem with that...however several of your ilk like to tell the rest of us that we are inferior.

I don't think anyone who doesn't make a noise is inferior in any way. They pay their money so can choose to support the lads how they want. Sit in silence, moan, sing, whatever that may be. It seems that some people, not just on here but on previous threads have seemed as though they want the idea to fail and want the ground to be like a morgue. Some people also think that english grounds have great atmospheres but that hasn't been the case on a regular basis since at least the 80's.

I just hope that next year the people who don't want to join in the singing are not sitting in the south stand singing section as it would really have a bad effect on the atmosphere.

The thread was started by someone wishing to have a rally/rave under the stand prior to the game. Now correct me if I'm wrong but shouting and bawling and bouncing underneath the stands wouldn't contribute to a better atmosphere in the part of the sround that matters, the stands.

There was West Brom last season where it was 'mint' apparently.

No-one is objecting to a good atmosphere in the ground. It's the fault of the internet I suppose that people have to seek approval and youtube and high-five each other. I blame the over consumption of energy drinks to a certain extent also.

As has been said earlier, be spontanious, shout, scream, roar, bare your arse to the away fans while reciting Rudyard Kipling's If at the top of your voice if that's what you feel like doing.................

.............but don't think you are the best fans the club has ever had or the only ones that care anymore.

I don't see any Sunderland fan as beneath another or as better than there has ever been. We all have one common cause. I certainly don't think that dancing around in the concourse and throwing pints around would help the atmosphere at all. A bit of a sing song in there is harmless though.

The op said that we should get something LIKE that going. With that i very much doubt he meant get a rave going and get someone conducting singing. I think he meant lets get a hell of an atmosphere going and make the place intimidating more than anything else. Even if he did mean have a rave then it wouldnt happen anyway.

I am looking forward to next season because i will be able to stand and sing all game which is how i want to watch the match. If someone sits in the north stand in silence and just cheers goals then that does not make them any less of a fan than me. It's just their choice. I just hope that people who don't want to stand and sing move over into the middle of the lads who do want to stand and sing as there is ample room inside the ground for everyone to get what they want.

I am a narky sod and may be less informed but it's designated a singing area and not a standing area isn't it? Just if someone should purchase a seat and wish to sit and sing I hope you wouldn't have any objection.

It is labelled a singing area but people who want to sing at games, 99% of the time want to stand. The current area that sings is the SWC 99% of the time and that area is always standing so surely people could put 2 and 2 together. The vast majority of people going there want to stand and sing so the few that maybe don't will have problems seeing the game I think.

The club labelled it a singing area because they cannot be seen to be supporting fans standing, however the club will know that fans will be standing there and there is little they can do about it as seen with the SWC. They can throw 1 or 2 out but they can't make 4,000 fans sit if they don't want too.

Personally i'm in row 34 next year so shouldn't have any problem standing as i got a seat close to the back so I could do that. However I do know of people in groups of 10 or 20 who are sitting in row 20 who are going to stand all game. I would be reluctant to sit as I think that anyone who buys a seat in a singing area should probably know that they will not be using it very much, if at all. I want to stand and sing which is why i got my seat where it is so that it didnt disturb anyone wanting to sit. They had 40,000 other seats in the ground to choose from where they could sit in peace. Why choose to get one where they know people will be wanting to stand. It would just spoil it for people who did. I wouldn't go get a seat in the east stand and then start standing and trying to sing as the people there would not want to do that and i would not want to upset them. That is why the south stand was created.
