Shooting moving objects with a compact

Hey guys

I was at the manchester velodrome watching the national championships and i shot a number of photos with my compact. They were all shit! Any tips for shooting cyclists travelling at about 30mph using a Kodak compact or do I need to be looking to upgrade?

I'm going to be back there in a few weeks and i'd like to be able to take shots like these:

rather then a blurry dot.

Track the moving object, panning with it as smoothly as you can, and keep it in the centre of the frame to give you best chance of the camera keeping it in focus. If you can, try and select the fasted shutter speed available.

It's tricky enough using a DSLR tbh, very tough with a compact.

Shutter lag will be one of your biggest problems

Press it now in anticipation of the championships next year

A fast shutter speed is the trick to sharper images, therefore you can do a cpl of things depending on how flexible your camera is;

-Set the camera to sport mode / fast shutter speed
-Use as high a ISO as possible (800 / 1600) probably on a normal point and shoot cam

You can also try the panning technique that notspavin suggested.

hahaha, i didn't read your post properly and was about to say there's nowt the matter with them photos.

Why are they holding hands in the first photo? Are they in love or is one of them nervous?
