As yesterdays trip around the farne islands was scuppered [fog]
I decided to take the bairn to south shields for the day. and i have to say what a lovely day was had.
We wandered around the well manicured parks and the beach before heading up to whitburn for a spot of lunch,
sadly latimers cafe was closed, so with a bag of fresh scallops we headed back to colmans for fish and chips which we devoured next to souters light house whilst watching the mist slowly lift from the sea, and listened to the distant fog horn groaning in the haze,
I know that the sunshine can put a gloss on anywhere but sometimes beauty and joy can be found on your own doorstep.
ps. the fish and chips were simply the best and king scallops with black pudding are to die for ;)

Good post, it gets a slating by many, but I love the north east and feel lucky to live right on such a beautiful coastline.

Nice one mate.

I've got the bike out and if ive got to go between different work bases (around The Nook Area) and back to the office in Shields i choose the long way back, right around the perimeter of The Leas every time, when the weather is like this.

Latimers Cafe is lovely as well, sitting outside on the decking eating a big plate of Fruit De Mer with the sun bouncing up off the sea.

one thing I take for granted is the coast living so close to it, it is fantastic to just take the dogs for a walk and being on the beach in 10 minutes or so.

spot on.our coastline is fantastic..roker blockyard to whitburn is a great walk, however if the tide is right out hendon to ryhope along the beach takes some beating, but it has to be at very low tide or you'll be phoning the coastgaurd helicopter

i live in shields now, minutes off the beach and its a lush coastline, from customs house, round to dunes then walk along the leas is simply bliss on a nice day.

im wanting to get a kayak for the summer but its expensive outlay. its nice on a bike too, shame i have no mates throught here :(

Whitburn on that coast road with Cornthwaite Park on the right. Its next door to the Minchellas there, it sells all the fresh fish and that.

what are they like for prices? What are the scallops like? We've often talked about popping in there, but always end up at Morrison and then get stung £6 for about 4/5 littles ones

Very very expensive. Good selection and quality but you pay for it.

That's just generally mind as I can't remember the price of scallops themselves.

I said this yesterday at work - on a lovely hot day, there is neewhere better than Sheilds.

Infact I may go for a run along the coast after work if it keeps out nice. This thread has inspired me.

As an example, a bag of willicks that would sell anywhere else for 70p cost me £2.47 at Latimer's

Shouldn't this thread have been entitled 'Whitburn'

mrs shinton is from shields and we go loads , love it

marine park, fish & chips from colmons or smiths, walk along to mincellas back along the beach, bairn has a few rides in the fun fair

great day out get there early enough & park for fuck all on beach road

jobs a good'un

I would add bamburgh/seahouses as a top notch cheap day out as well

Agree with the OP. Took the 2 little ones down for the day and was amazed at the place.
The park is outstanding for little ones, the little steam train went down well!
If you compare how south shields has turned itself around over the last 20 years compared to WHitley Bay which has been left to rot, the council deserve a lot of credit.

Will it be hell this weekend though?

All police leave cancelled...not as bad as it used to be mind

People on here make far too much of the charvers at beaches. In the most part they keep themselves to themselves and just enjoy the day out like everyone else.

Too many snobs on here. Shields is cracking when the sun gets out.
