Sheffield United v West Ham

It has everything to do with VAR. Yes it's the rule now but these types of infringements are so minimal that only VAR sees them. Same with the offside rule. VAR allows us to apply the rule correctly by stopping the game for 5 minutes to project a line across a player's toe. It's the worst thing that had happened to the game in my lifetime.

But fans have made their bed with all their whinging and abuse of refs. Now they have to lie in it.
Your last line is spot on I've been saying it for months. I'd also add managers, players and pundits to the list. How many times have pundits said 'refs decisions are costing managers jobs'?
Now they're twisting cos VAR is getting them right.

Spot on. The obsession with 'consistency' is probably the dumbest narrative around officiating. The quest to find rules that negate any need for interpretation have brought us here.

You do realise that whatever law you introduce, however it's worded, you will never have consistency. It is complete fantasy to think that there will ever be a handball rule which will categorically reduce all decisions to a yes it was or no it wasn't. The only way to achieve this would be to have a strict handball rule where any contact with the hand is handball and nobody wants this.

I love this idea of 'consistency' that you always hear fans talking about. No, you want decisions to be correct as often as possible.

Some of us have been saying it for decades ;)

I also love the idea of a magical handball rule that will have everyone in agreement on every incident.

Rule should be 'is the player seeking to gain an advantage with his hand'?

Ref decides.

f***ing get on with it.

Exactly. This country gives knighthoods to people like Alex Ferguson who absolutely slaughter referees and call their integrity into question.

This all day long. VAR is in place to step in when there has been a clear and obvious mistake, not where someone’s big toe is offside.

The goal disallowed tonight was correctly disallowed because by the letter of the law it was handball. However, it’s debatable whether the ref made a clear and obvious mistake.

Its not debatable. It unquestionably and unequivocally hit his arm. How can it not be clear and obvious when you can see that it hit his arm without any doubt?

I thought that was a handball. Whether intentional or not, Rice has gained an advantage from the ball striking his arm. With the speed they were attacking, if the ball doesn't hit his arm the ball doesn't fall perfectly into his path. Sheff Utd get more time to recover, West Ham dont get the opportunity.
