Sexual abuse on Kenyan tea farms revealed

That’s mental. I feel so sorry for the poor women. They’ve had no other choice as they need a job and these scrotes exploit their positions like that. Hopefully will get what they deserve.

Prefer Yorkshire tea meself.

Its one if those products where we've known for years the supply of it has never really been ethical. Plenty of exploitation.
People have used power and influence for as long as we have had power and influence.

Thai prostitutes would probably prefer to have a nice office job but economic circumstances mean they have to have sex with creepy fat westerners for money.

Difficult to see how this sort of thing could be eradicated. Even top film actresses have had to succumb to get the parts that these people have to give away.

The human race would have to change completely to get rid of it from the 4 corners of the world.

Its sad and pisses me right off that it happens mind, I bet what gets discovered by the press is just the tip of the iceberg too :(

Thanks to the mods for changing the thread title.

It was out of order with my original title and will again say sorry for any offence caused

Grim that it's still happening, really. I don't think that there's any real comparison with what's been happening to these women and women who choose to work as sex workers, in whatever country. Treating sex as a commodity to sell, is very different to being effectively blackmailed and raped.

The sex worker "choose" because the alternative is grim. I can see major similarities in the predicament. Poverty and little or no alternative is constant.

We can agree it is grim and a depressing part of the human condition for many.

Things like this happen in all agro commodities across Africa and Asia. The multinationals know about it - the article mentions the ‘policies and procedures” that Unilever had in place. If they wanted them to work they would but at the expense of some profit. What they do do is just the equivalent of green washing/ sports washing. Human rights washing might be the next phrase we need.

Taking Thailand, as in your example, there are plenty of alternatives which may not be terribly attractive from a western perspective but which have sufficed for a long time, but don't really offer the chance to change things for the better. To someone with very limited education, sex work provides an opportunity to make a considerable amount of money, often more than those cushy office jobs you mentioned - salary levels for degree entry jobs aren't great - and maybe make a real difference to their own futures and those of their families and children. We're not talking about backstreet brothels in Kolkata or victims of sex trafficking.

It may seem like the least shit of a long list of shit alternatives, but I think there's generally a different mindset towards sex which means that it's not as dreadful as it might seem to us, and might explain why some of those office workers and bank tellers also have 'part-time jobs' in the evenings which fund those LV handbags and the like.

They are still f***ing awful old foreigners for money no matter how "attractive" the prospect is.

It is all exploitation IMHO. Just of varying degrees.
