I’m going to hazard a guess that as someone called them Punjabs earlier, it’s an abbreviation of that. Mebbes based on some kind of footwear brought back from India during the days of the Raj?

They did normally have a one of them rubber "empire made" stickers on the bottom thinking about it. But they were only ever Sandshoes in my era south of the river. Never heard of jabs.
