In fairness Argentina never really had the players to bring the best out of Maradona. They did have some good players like Valdano and Burruchaga but Maradona made it happen almost by himself. He was almost like a school boy who just loved playing football. you gave him the ball and he did what he wanted with it, regardless of who the opposition was. The goal against England in the Azteca was unreal given the standard of the opposition and the occasion. Hardly surprising that it was voted one of the goals of the century. Breathtaking.Messi and Barça at their best had a symbiotic relationshiop - them both mutually enhancing their qualities. Argentina just don't have the playmakers to bring the best out of Messi - he can't make the passes and be there in time to receive them
I saw him play:Would be interested for you to tell me what games you watched Maradona play in mate
v England at Wembley circa 1978/79 (dribbled past about 5 England players and put the ball about 6 inches past Clemence's post)
v Yugoslavia in Florence at Italia 90 (famously missed a penalty - boiling hot day in which the likes of Prosinecki played for Yugoslavia - before the break up of Yugoslavia into Croatia etc.)
for Barcelona v Man United at OT in 1982 (Bernd Schuster also played for Barca) and
for the ROW team at Wembley in the FA/FL centenary game
Immense just watching him kicking in before the game.
