Seriously, what is wrong with Messi?

What can't be ignored is how much better everyone is - better conditioned both physically and tactically. Pele had freedom to play that Messi would never be allowed by the opposition, and who can forget Maradona running away from Reidy:)
It is getting harder and harder to be exceptional - that players such a Messi and Ronaldo can do this more than any other players shows just how good they are

Can't agree with that tbh.

Both maradonna and pele were kicked to bits week in week out and although I can't comment on the defenders in Pele's era but the defenses and defenders in maradonna's era were streets ahead of anything that the either messi or Ronaldo would face now.

Exactly. He is one of the best players ever. Just not the best player ever.

This would be my view as well ~ superb player.

Think he's carrying an injury at the minute and expected to perform as if he's 100%.

I wish people would stop going on about Maradona, he was a great player and Lance Armstrong was a great cyclist the other thing they have in common is they are both drug cheats. Both caught both confessed.

Yeah but one took performance enhancing drugs and the other took performance inhibiting drugs.

Nowt to do with his performances it's his general all round miserbleness and stinking attitude

I noticed that the Argentinian front 3 all did fuck all when not in possession, seemed to be the way they play.
Save energy for attacks?

If an unknown player had stepped up with his contribution to the world cup, everyone would be wanking over him. SSN would be showing highlights packages of him on rotation whilst getting 'Arry on the phone to confirm that he is "Triffic and would be great at QPR". They would be interviewing the people of London on the streets who would all claim to have spotted him coming through the youth ranks of Braga B back in 2001.

A victim of his own ridiculously high standards.

That is very true, he still did many things this world cup that no-one else can.
The thing is people decide the "rules" to greatness to fit in with what they want to believe anyway.
If Argentina hadn't won the world cup in 1986 Maradona would still be one of the greatest (greatest I've seen btw) ever.

Not doubting his ability as a person he comes across as a complete arrogant tosser

You must despise Ronaldo then lol
Ronaldo plays with passion and emotion I respect that he does his best for the team messi just appeared to be in it for himself he should be inspiring his team Mates getting the best out of them not strolling around with a face like a smacked arse

Been watching Messi last 7 years and for t he last 12 months something isn't right. He's still got the pace to go past people, still has moments of sublime skill and still can score some amazing goals. He looks human now Now when he plays I don't expect him to score. He often goes 3 or 4 games without a goal He never smiles, looks disinterested and fades out of games. Has he got some illness we don't know about? what with being sick 5 times on the pitch during games. I don't know the answer but he is just a 6.5 out of 10 player most games now, just doing the minimum to get by. To be fair he is in a poor argentina team, but it was the same when in the Barcelona team. Is he ill ? depressed? or just bored

He's just won player of the tournament at the world cup. Pretty much every game he was marked by three players.

When you're guaranteed to best player award despite being no where near and adulation even when you do nowt it might go to your head
im a fan of Messi's but, i just didn't get that player of the tournament award. Who the hell made that decision?.

Look at the pic of the two of them getting their awards. Standing in their respective national shirts produced by adidas, with adidas logos on both awards

He was chosen player of the Cup after all.

Would not agree with that but at the same time doesn't suggest that there is something wrong with him. He was marked closely scored a few important goals and probably created space for his fellow Argies - a team who did get to the final.

The bloke isnt superman..

I thought he played well yesterday tbh, showed a few flashes of brilliance

And would it pertain to Real Madrid too? I like Zidane but when he headbutted that guy, it just makes me wonder if his testosterone was a bit on a high level. Of course, ZZ did that a few other times in the past, Serie A possibly could have had doping going on, La Liga too.

Zidane is one of the great underrated nutcases, he has headbutted people throughout his career.

It's a big topic of debate here (in Catalonia) as well - wht is happening with Messi? Will we ever see the real Messi again? My guess is that he's simply suffering from burn-out - he's never rested properly in 8 years. His attitude is not one of arrogance - he lives in his own little world - he's suspected of suffering from a mild form of asperger's disease ( a form of autism). What no one has explained yet are the little vomits he now seems to continually suffer from.

Solution -a good, long holiday - and come back to football with his new mate chomper Suarez in October.

Whilst thats true Maradona and Pele had similar entourages surrounding them. the problem was that both players found ways past them. although the 1982 wasnt a one that Maradona particularly excelled at (although he did give one or two glimpses of what was to come) there is a very famous picture of him playing the Belgians in the opening game with almost the entire Belgian team within 10 feet of him.

Messi has been superb in club football but it widely acknowledged that and to date he has never really turned it on in an Argentine shirt. Unfathomable really but there is time yet for him to shine on the world cup stage.

Messi and Barça at their best had a symbiotic relationshiop - them both mutually enhancing their qualities. Argentina just don't have the playmakers to bring the best out of Messi - he can't make the passes and be there in time to receive them

It is a wall. The picture was taken just after a short freekick as the wall breaks.
