Seriously, what is wrong with Messi?

I find it staggering there are posters on here who can champion players so knowingly when they simply hardly ever seen them play tbh

You would think certain players in the olden days never had bad games they way some idiots go on

He won the Adidas sponsored player of the tournament award.
Ultimately, if one player was made the player of the tournament, it might be?

Mascherano or Schweinsteiger, someone like this, Klose, they could have selected a name much less recognised. Giving it to Messi yes, is a joke especially since he missed a big chance.

But that's not what he got booted out of the USA World Cup for. Good book is the book "Hand of God" about Maradona. I think he reflected the times. This is a bit of a rant but back in the old days, unfortunately, a lot of people probably used amphetamine on the pitch. It might have been a bit of a norm in some places like Argentina the way doping has been in the Tour De France in the past at least, I don't know about now.

Anyway, I'm not going to write up a long thing here, Maradona claims the ephedrine found in his test at the 1994 World Cup was from using some sort of diet drug. Well, ephedrine has in fact, been in a lot of diet pills so I don't consider this a huge strike against Maradona.

And would it pertain to Real Madrid too? I like Zidane but when he headbutted that guy, it just makes me wonder if his testosterone was a bit on a high level. Of course, ZZ did that a few other times in the past, Serie A possibly could have had doping going on, La Liga too.

Of course, not suggesting that it's only Barcelona who were doping by any stretch. Unfortunately, there's probably not many sports where the use of performance-enhancing substances isn't rife nowadays.

Haven't read the whole thread, but for what it's worth, he is human. Everyone has ups and downs, be it in football or any other walk of life (difference is, most of us aren't under the micro-scope). He's got the weight of an entire nation on his shoulders, comparing him with Maradona etc. If there's nothing on, give it to him. Good defensive teams wise up up to this. Every time he gets the ball, there's 3 or 4 around him almost immediately. If he'd played Brazil last night, he'd have probably scored 5 like and he did score some cracking goals.

Also, Ronaldo did fuck all.

Suarez is one unpopular player but to me, Suarez seems able to carry a whole team on his back. To me, that's a great asset needless to say only if he didn't make a fool himself at other times. That was so with Maradona too, carrying a team. They always say Pele had some great players alongside him as well.

I just cant understand how those who hardly ever seen Maradona play can make that claim which such authority tbh

Maradona was exceptional and absolutely turned Napoli around, virtually by himself.

Messi is exceptional also.

2 very different players in different eras and circumstances.

Still know who I'd rather have a night out on the lash with though.

Hello Rob, while your argument certainly has its merits, it can also be turned on its head as in what you are basically saying is that Messi has probably had 3 or 4 times the opportunity to prove to us that saw Maradona maybe 15-20 times that he is the better player, yet he has continually failed to do so. I'll hazard a guess that you're of an age where you're football knowledge in 86 was not at the level it is now. Those of us that witnessed that world cup first hand recognised that we were watching something like no other we had ever seen in Maradona's performances as they were equally as memorable as Messi's have been forgettable this world cup. There's no right answer as to who was/is the greatest ever as its totally opinion based but I reckon you'd be hard pushed to find many under the age of 45 or closer to 50 that witnessed both in their finest moments that would put Messi above Maradona.

Thing is, he has performed at this World Cup. He hadn't been brilliant but he hadn't been shite, either.

7/10 which still isn't to be sniffed at.

He has a runners up medal and it was close to being a winning one.
So he's been decent, but he hasn't been the messiah?

Careful now, you may incite ridicule with comments like that!:D

Have you actually sat and watched Messi the past 5 year or so? By and large he has been imperious over that period, just simply phenomenal game after game. I would say a good 250+ games of more or less outstanding football.

Was Maradona as consistent over a similar period? Who knows but I just cant understand how people can act all high and mighty on the subject when the games were not simply shown on television back then

If I decided to take Messi 15 best performances then try and claim he was the best ever just based on them I would be quite rightly laughed at. You would think Maradona and Pele etc etc never had a bad game the way some folk go on. I am very confident that if there games came under the same scrutiny that Messi and Ronaldos do now both Maradona and Pele would have received similar criticism cos nobody can be that good all the time

Sometimes these all time greats are unfairly judged cos they are expected to keep up phenomenal levels 100% of the time and are always judged by ridiculously high standards the players set in the first place

I don't believe Messi is an all time Great personally, but in his defence he has been flogged like a dead carthorse, and may well have been completely knackered. He did say in an interview before the Final that he felt exhausted. When the tank is running low you're never going to keep up top speed.

I love watching Messi play and hoped for him to have a wonderful word cup but sadly, it never happened for him. No one has ever claimed Maradona never had a bad game, Messi has them too. I've seen Messi have many, many wonderful moments but I, as many do, still prefer Maradona. Not forgetting, Maradona played in an age when the pitches were poorer and against the likes of Goikoetxea, Baresi, Gentile, Maldini who were absolute masters in the art of defending and in a very defensive league in Italy and at a time when defenders got away with murder and never had team mates anywhere near the quality of Xavi and Iniesta putting things on a plate for him and that does matter as Messi has found out in this world cup. I'm not trying to come across as high and mighty in my opinion, its just my opinion as you no doubt have yours. For me, Messi will go down with the likes of Zidane, Platini, both Ronaldo's, Best etc. which is great company to be in.
