Serious question about handball.

For Liverpools pen both pundits said it was definitly accidental hb but also a definite penalty? I though accidental hb was not a pen?

I think it's a case of whether the defender gains an advantage of it, not whether it was intentional or not.

A direct free kick is also awarded to the opposing team if a player commits any
of the following three offences:
• holds an opponent
• spits at an opponent
• handles the ball deliberately (except for the goalkeeper within his own
penalty area)

The unwritten law of common sense also comes into play, if there is a handball in the area and it denies a goal-scoring opportunity then common sense says that a penalty should be given imho.

Fair enough. In that case Spurs penalty shouldn't have been given today. He was trying to protect his face, not deliberately handball it

so Keegan and the other no mark are talking out of their arses?

It seems to depend on arm position aswell, if arms are own by your side it's less likely to be given, if your arms are flailing about then the ref is likely to give it.

If he had time to raise his hand to protect his face, could he not just have moved his head a bit and headed it away instead?

Didn't see the play. Just wanted to point out that "trying to protect his face" or "trying to_____" by definition means that it WAS deliberate and would be a penalty under strict interpretation of the rules. If you were intentionally making a joke, then of course, never mind. :)
