Sell by dates

I have loads of out of date stuff; herbs and spices, poppy seeds (1999), pudding rice various dates (2002/2006). As stated, if it looks and smells OK it probably will be. Meat is the only thing I am a bit careful with.

There was a yoghourt in the fridge at work on Friday afternoon it said 5/11. Thought it must mean May 2011. Then looked at it more closely it was 5/11/10. It was fine. Don't know why it hadn't gone off? Preservatives?

Did it say Cravendale on the label?

Just had a clean out of the food cupboard:

2 x jars of curry paste (opened)
1 x set of lasagne verdi pasta sheets (a few left in box)
1 x chocolate bar
1 x packet of raisins
All had to go the journey.

Go and have a look, there's bound to be summit that's off.

That's daft that mate, bet the chocolate and pasta would have been fine. Maybe even the raisins, should have just had a look at them ,you can see if fruit is off or not by sight. . . .

Sell by means what it says, Use by is different.
You always use stuff within the use by date and use your senses of smell and taste to decide if sell by stuff is ok.
As a rule if it smells ok and then tastes ok it usually is.
Fruit and cheese with BB dates on,lol.

Not that I would ever keep any long enough to find out mind. I find this a bit odd.

It's like somebody I knew was going to hoy out a bit of cheddar that had the slightest hint of blue round the edge, then quite happily tucking into some Gorgonzola.

If I ever have a bit of cheese that has a bit of mould on the outside, I just cut a slice off bin it and use the rest.

I get paranoid about use by dates, mainly because I have no sense of smell. Whenever i'm cooking something with prawns in, they always get thrust under my girlfriends nose and asked "do these smell alright?". She hates it!

Best before is simply that though - it's considered at it's 'best' before the date shown.

Apart from the open jar, if stored in a dry place, they will be fine.

Tins will be fine for many many years. John Noakes on Blue Peter ate from a one found from the Napoleonic war. It was fine.

Except it never says that in reality.

Good article in today's mirror on this topic. Apparently tinned foods whilst lasting forever unless it rusts or gets damaged will start to lose taste after 20 or so years

Tinned food can survive a nuclear strike man.

EDIT : I should know, I watched Threads this morning.

I watched that a few weeks ago, very good and I would think quite accurate
