Is this not just to avoid being stuck with a huge squad?

He just wants a stronger but more streamlined group to work with. Simple really.

Exactly this IMO!

No need for the negative ‘wa doomed’ brigade to come out. The club is trying to run more efficiently, so they won’t just keep adding players without shifting out those who are surplus to Requirements.

Simple really, as you say.

Pretty sure Ross is talking about numbers, however we desperately need a CB. Hope we’re not waiting to move on one of the current 4 first.

2 year contract for Loovens :(

It's amazing. People on here are becoming more and more precious, more and more angry at everything and just looking for the next thing to pounce on to slag off the owners.

Last summer we were happy to be rid of Short and a lot were happy at the new strategy of living within our means... it turns out we're not and falling short right at the end has caused everyone to have a mag style meltdown.

You cant set a target of 100 points (15 more than last season) then implement a further austerity drive at the club. It stands to reason that the same players with the same manager, deploying the same tactics will by and large get the same results.....or worse if opposition clubs now know how Sunderland will approach games....it could be argued that scenario had already started playing out given our poor form for the last few months of last season.

Ross isn't talking about an austerity drive mate. He's on about a smaller squad with more quality. Exactly what we need.

Cattermole will still be drawing a wage from us.

The owner said that wouldn't happen under his watch so until you can show evidence to the contrary I'll assume his wages are now off the books.

You can interpret it whichever way you like mate. Between £2-3m are off the wage bill and arguably our best CM player has left....who is his replacement?

Time will tell, Dobson perhaps? The squad is still too bloated though. Ross has said previously he wants a smaller squad.

Ok, he only wanted to leave because he could see what mess our owner is in , and could only see things getting worse . Ideally he wanted to stay .
Or he's 31 and knows it was the right time for both to part ways. He was on a fortune and might have struggled for a good move if he waits until the end of his contract.

Cattermole would have received a golden handshake doubt he would still be drawing wage

I think it'll amount to the same thing. Theyve save a year of his contract, but I doubt they'll have paid the lump sum. More likely installments, on a weekly basis :D
