Self checkouts in Aldi

This is like the pandemic, people are absolutely incapable of understanding the the second and third affects of decisions.

AI doesn’t take jobs off people - it enables additional job creation.

Stage 1: Click and Collect or home delivery, checkout workers change role to packers.

Stage 2: Delivery drivers employed.

Stage 3: Website designed for e-commerce and had a staff maintaining it.

Stage 4: More manufacturing jobs dor
Refrigerator vehicles that weren’t needed previously.

Change in consumer habits means customers have better experience and additional jobs are created.
It will effect so many jobs. Other jobs will be created. Whether those in the current jobs will be capable of moving to other jobs is the thing. It will probably balance out numerically, but it will have a negative impact on some people. However, there is an inevatibilty about the world moving on. For retail, it's generally a job with not great hours, and generally shops are struggling with recruitment, so automation may he an answer

My niece works in Aldi….they were told a few weeks ago that they would be getting the self checkout nstalled shortly,at the same time she has had her hours increased and they are recruiting additional staff

There are huge shortages of workers in other areas so automation will free up people to move into those shortage occupations.
Bollocks.
So a lass who has been on the tills at a supermarket gets paid off now has to go and search for another job totally different to what she got and was employed to do?

Its just another example of technology changing things, just like smart phone apps meaning fewer call centres are needed etc.. But there are still plenty of jobs out there, just in other areas.

Yes, that's how career progression works - or would you rather that lass (or lad) be tied to a checkout for the rest of their working life?

Don't ever use them, they scare me and I'd be mortified if I didn't do something properly and ended up being rugby tackled by some meat head security dude (or maybe I'd like that 🤔, they may be worth a little reconsideration then  ).

No.
A lass who chooses to work on a checkout in a supermarket does so because that is what she chooses to do.
Not a career progression.
It's simply a job, which briins the money into the household.

That is their choosing.
It is not a career, it is a job to bring money into the house.
