Selection Headache

Yeah he will for definite. If Welbeck and Gyan tear up Everton on Monday Night it just keeps becoming harder and harder to break the pair up.

It does but Bruce is not stupid. Without bent fuck knows where we would be, same as Gordon getting back in the team, it will only be a matter of time before our forward line is Bent and Gyan.

Welbeck will either go on the wing or have to wait. He is not in the same class as Bent and Gyan and as such you pick your best players.

He had a good game v Chelsea which is fair enough, and has hardly played up front, but whichever way you look at it, its a nice decision for Bruce to have to make.

Bruce had a good look at Gyan before getting him, and i've no doubt that he thinks that Bent and Gyan can play together up front.

Well that's all fine and well, you're entitled to your opinion. There is no way I'm going to get my self carried away over Welbeck, as to be honest Chelsea is welbecks only decent game all season. I'm surprised you seem to rate Welbeck higher as a footballer, considering what bent has done for us, I'm gutted to be honest - it just shows how fickle most fans are.

What more does bent have to do?

Think you're missing the point.

I'm not comparing them as goalscorers, I'm talking about what you get from each player. Bent has a one dimensional game and doesn't particularly carry the ball or do much outside the box, nor has he never particularly built up a partnership. His scoring record is tremendous - I'm not knocking him, what I'm saying is Welbeck contributes more in open play and whilst everyone is raving on about how they want N'Zogbia, well with Welbeck we've got someone who is similar in the respect he can run at people, he can dribble and run past people and he can carry the ball, but maybe doesn't always pick the right option, like N'zogbia. When we dont really have too much quality from wide or midfield, then a player able to do that shouldn't be underestimated.

I dont think we'd ever play like we did against Chelsea with Bent upfront, nor could Bent ever play as well as Welbeck did in that game because he simply hasn't got it in his game and he doesn't try to. Obviously though because he scores goals you can't really leave him out for so long - but what I'm saying is the exact reason he's here and wasn't particulary a favourite at Spurs.

And I'm not sure why we'd drop Gyan either - he's a better footballer than Bent. If a partnership cannot be built, then we'd have to rely on them as individuals.

I would be surprised if ANYONE who played against Chelsea loses their starting place. I've watched SAFC for 45 years and can count on one hand the number of comparable performances. I'm sure Bent will start on the bench but given 20 mins at some stage. After that, who knows but i think a possible 4-3-3 formation could be justified given the level of opposition over the next few weeks.

Welbecks only decent game all season?

I think you're still totally missing the point. It's not about rating Welbeck over Bent, it's about being a different type of player and posessing a few things in his game which Bent simply doesn't have, which have helped us as a team as we don't have anyone else who does it either.

Personally speaking I would like Bent to do more outside the box, but I accept it's simply not his game and I'm happy as long as he's scoring. But do you think it's coincedence that ball retention has mostly been poor when he's played, because far too often we knock it over the top/get it forward quickly to create openings for him and it's very one-dimensional. All I'm suggesting really is variation, which is what we've seen more of since Gyan and also Welbeck came into the team.

And fickle, do me a favour.

You're contradicting your self perry. And Yes, Welbeck hasn't really done anything this season (apart from chelsea) I know he's been out wide so I'm probably being unfair, but that's beside the point. I don't have time to entertain your need for seasoned debate, so I guess we're going to have to agree to disagree. What ever transpires in the future i'm happy as long as we're successful.

How?

Welbeck has had an effect in several games, Man City, Spurs come to mind instantly for example.

The differences in what Welbeck and Bent offer couldn't be more obvious and all I'm doing is pointing out how it's helped us and why I wouldn't rush Bent back in. You seemed to be taking it as some kind of insult against Bent, which it just ridiculous, to the point you called me fickle.

There is no selection headache for tomorrow. Same team plays simple as.

Bent is currently easing his way back to fitness and there is absolutely no need to rush him back given that Gyan and Welbeck had a stormer last week.

Its the formation that Bruce will be thinking about. 4-4-2 is the way forward but Everton play 4-5-1 in midfield do they not, so that needs careful consideration.

I'm not even sure why this is a discussion or even a question. Bents fit = Bent plays, Bents unsure about his fitness = Bent doesn't play. It's not difficult.

No headache at all, you play Bent and Gyan.

The headache is changing the system way we play to get the best out of them.

Bent only said the other week that they haven't worked together as only been working on 451. So it will take a few games.

Can't see how anybody can say it will or won't work as a partnership, I can see them causing a lot of problems with their running and spreading the defence, should leave gaps for midfield runners if we have any.

Welbeck will be heading back to ManU. We need to get cracking with Bent ang Gyan up front as soon as Benty is fit.

There are some good points made throughout this thread but the one quoted here is particularly important. If Welbeck continues to develop and build on his performances at Spurs and Chelsea we will have no chance of signing him permanently. Consequently, we should avoid alienating the two main strikers we have signed - Bent and Gyan.

Personally, I would agree with the comments that Bent is more limited than Gyan and Welbeck as an all-round footballer, but his finishing is far superior to Welbeck's at present.

Let us hope that when Campbell gets fit he carries on from where he left off rather than how he first started at SAFC. He could then be a suitable replacement when Welbeck goes back to Man Utd.

As for the Everton game I think Bent will be on the bench even if fit. It would send the wrong message to the players to drop anyone after the Chelsea game. Bent will come on as sub and will then have a good chance of a start at Wolves. Who drops out will depend on how they all play against Everton.
