Difference was then though mate that footballers at the top level weren't all millionaires which required different man management skills to get the best out of them.

Of course Clough had these but his methods would have been of no use to the modern day player...........

Ferguson now couldn't start in the same vein he only succeeded due to the respect he had down to the longevity of his career and the fact he had seen a far few players grow up in his time there.............
Spot on that. Fergie started off as a tyrant, achieved success and so (quite rightly) got respect to continue and/or adapt.

I believe if Paolo has learnt from his ridiculous ott methods (not talking to the staff is the one that I have no idea wtf he was thinking) I think he could be great.

Not sure how long players have been making their own decisions (I think it's getting worse and managers have less and less influence on a performance) but a few I can think of are....
  • England's headless chicken 2nd half v Germany. My guess ( :)) is that the players, fuming over Lamp's disallowed goal, went at them and got picked off in humiliating fashion. Not a cat-in-hell's chance a coach like Capello would've telt them to do that at h/t and only 2-1 down.
  • Fergie said after the 6-1 defeat v Man City that the players took it upon themselves to continue to attack at 3-1 down, when they only had 10 men. They went for it and got battered.
  • And finally Bruce ( :)) said during one of his blips that "we don't play like that in training" (but we just hoof it, nobody showing for it etc when it matters). Incredible that 4-5 years on, nowt's changed.

Too true. We definitely need a little bit a madness and a whole lot of patience build something worthwhile and with longevity.

I know its international football but the Belgian FA came up with a plan and said it would take 7 years to produce the talent necessary to be competitive in tournament football.

So firstly a huge shift in philosophy then wait 7 years and we'll be awesome!
If you and @nemo don't stop talking sense, I will report you both for being constructive and visionary.

I dont subscribe that much to the "no smoke without fire" viewpoint normally but the evidence is in front of the eyes regarding fitness & potential pissed up players

I just look forward to the day when the old guard fuck off - the division we end up in is secondary to those fuckers pissing off

Training staff, or the dinner ladies? There was enough evidence to dispel the idea that they weren't allowed to speak to the training staff and that they even managed to have a laugh with them. I know this to be true. The dinner ladies? So how in God's name did they order lunch, use f***ing semaphore? :D

I may be wrong but until I hear otherwise from somewhere reliable this was almost certainly complete and utter bollocks thrown to the press by the agents of disgruntled players. For me this was generated on the back of Di Canio's throwaway comments about him not wanting people to interrupt the player's preparations on match days. Probably the ridiculous assertion that Paolo himself referred to during his interview.

@---Nemo--- , @bagpiperay, @Moneyball and the likes of you...if you don't stop talking sense, be constructive and have vision I will report you all for being clued up. I've warned you.[DOUBLEPOST=1396457790][/DOUBLEPOST]

What did it for the is the cowardice of all that garbage coming out knowing full well he couldn't respond because of his contractual obligation.
What tells me everything I need to know is that nobody sued him when he gave his side.

Exactly. His comments about having proof that a lot of what was being reported was rubbish and that plenty of the players had thanked him and wished him well kept Uncle Ellis at bay and ensured he got his pay off. He may be "mental", but he's clearly not as daft as he's painted on here. ;)

Certain Craig Russell came to & said the players weren't allowed to talk to him and hes a masseur at the club

Ever thought that this is going on behind closed doors at the "Tuesday Club"?
Woodgate was well known for his house parties where all sorts went on that was a disgrace for a professional sportsman.

Exactly. Sit outside Wynyard or Darras Hall on a Tuesday night (when no match midweek) and see how many players are in and out all night. Tells you all you need to know.

The only time he asked for "non senior" staff not to communicate with the players was on a match day. He wanted all players to be focused and not distracted. Also, he believed in a hierarchy respect type method. Old school and disciplined. Other than match day, I know of staff who found him spot on. He did have strict procedures in place which were so far away from MON it will have felt worse for the players. However, keeping them off the booze and away fromItalian restaurants 4 times per week is not a bad thing IMO.

His ego was though.

Exactly as I remembered it.

Can't the players gan out like
Have they got to be cabined up 24/7

Yes there professional athletes but there allowed out man

Of course they are and PDC had no issue with that. Go out after the game and have a meal and a glass on wine with the family. He did have an issue with getting smashed midweek and stinking of drink the following day. As a professional athlete that is f***ing shambolic and would have effected performance on a match day 100%.[DOUBLEPOST=1396459316][/DOUBLEPOST]

That's not me remembering it. It is now it happened. Obviously, he went mental with press and made himself a target. Once that happened it was an easy way for him to be took on from all corners. He needs to learn he is not the only think that is important at a club.

Of course they are. There was a massive drinking culture at United in the late 80's and early 90's but they still did it on the pitch. This lot aren't.

The way our lot have been playing of late they've obviously changed things radically since the days of the "Tuesday Club". There's now a Monday Club, Tuesday Club, Wednesday Club ..........

Exactly paul McGrath & btryan robson were two of the biggest pissheads in football yet still did there jobs

Mind heared a beauty bout robson he'd get to training an hour early & were a bin bag ower his training gear apperantly the bin bag would help sweat the booze out of his system !!!!

I should try that

McGrath could have been one of the best in the world but he liked the drink too much and had dodgy knees. Robson was one of the best in the world. Likes of Fletcher are no where near good enough to justify the drink they consume
