Spot on that. Fergie started off as a tyrant, achieved success and so (quite rightly) got respect to continue and/or adapt.Difference was then though mate that footballers at the top level weren't all millionaires which required different man management skills to get the best out of them.
Of course Clough had these but his methods would have been of no use to the modern day player...........
Ferguson now couldn't start in the same vein he only succeeded due to the respect he had down to the longevity of his career and the fact he had seen a far few players grow up in his time there.............
I believe if Paolo has learnt from his ridiculous ott methods (not talking to the staff is the one that I have no idea wtf he was thinking) I think he could be great.
Not sure how long players have been making their own decisions (I think it's getting worse and managers have less and less influence on a performance) but a few I can think of are....
- England's headless chicken 2nd half v Germany. My guess (
) is that the players, fuming over Lamp's disallowed goal, went at them and got picked off in humiliating fashion. Not a cat-in-hell's chance a coach like Capello would've telt them to do that at h/t and only 2-1 down.
- Fergie said after the 6-1 defeat v Man City that the players took it upon themselves to continue to attack at 3-1 down, when they only had 10 men. They went for it and got battered.
- And finally Bruce (
) said during one of his blips that "we don't play like that in training" (but we just hoof it, nobody showing for it etc when it matters). Incredible that 4-5 years on, nowt's changed.
