Hi all, I have only ever fished on rivers before. We are going to Eyemouth for our hols on Monday and I would like to take my son pier fishing, any tips hints or suggestions on what to try and catch and how. He is nearly 5 and really keen. My first thought was to try and get some crab catching gear and use it with a rod and lione so he could get used to reeling in but not worry about casting.

Fish at dusk or night. Sea fish don't come in to the shallows during daylight.

Use heavy tackle: 8oz lead and paternoster rig. You need your bait to stay still so the fish can home in on it.

Try crab for bait if you're going for cod.

Use feathers if you want mackerel.

Thanks, might try spinning for mackerel, I guess I will be able to buy made up feather rigs when I am there?

worm baits and crab are lethal for cod. been getting some canny plaice of shields with it too (i know you said eyemouth like)

try spinning for mackerel, allways good fun altho highly doubt there will be any in yet.

i would use a simple 2 hook flapper rig,try rag worm tipped with mackerel and lug worm tipped with crab.

have a look on NESA (google it, north east sea angling) and have a look, loads help, imon there too.

I,ve fished Eyemouth many times and at this time of year you need to fish off the rock edges to catch cod or pollack. These spots are not suitable for small children. For a bit of good fun, fish in the harbour for small coalfish and the odd flounder. Best bait is mackeral or herring cut into small strips or ragworm.

still a good month or so yet before there caught off piers...

You could be right. But the OP is taking a 5yo kid and hoiking feathers out and retrieving is probably more fun than sitting with a static bait.

Just going back to my memories as a kid on Roker Pier.

thats right, not looking for good sport just to give the lad a go at fishing. He always asks to go when I am on the river, but there aren't many safe places to take him with my club.

What about the crab idea? could always use any caught as bait?

If I go to the beach and just start digging where I see casts will I get worms?

Get him a 6ft whip and he'll be happy as Larry.

Have a look here for bait ideas.

Phone Rutherfords on Roker Avenue for bait the day before.

you wont catch peelers, they hide in all the crevices well out the way to "peel"

ide be carefull digging lug, some plces its not allowed, find your casts and dig down, back-filling as you go.

I would do the opposite. use your normal river tackle and a biggish float. Those bubbles for trout fishing are ideal. Fish the tide coming in and use rag or lug. The bloke next to you will have heavy gear and cast for miles and get snagged every cast and catch fook all. Meanwhile, you'll be float fishing, catching coalfish every cast and laughing your tits off at him !

really?
should I use some weight with the bubble float?
how long of a hook length should I leave?

cheers, that does sound better in the interests of not loosing all my gear and it gives my son something to watch in the water.

Wish I knew how to catch fish here, been out half a dozen times and got naff all
