Clowns these days seem to be more often associated with creepy horror than with wholesome children's entertainment. Were they ever considered not creepy or is it only since things like Poltergeist and Stephen King's IT became popular?

Serial John Wayne Gacy dressing up as a clown and working as a children's entertainer can't have helped either.

I don't find them funny
I don't find them scary
I find the sentimental ones the worst

but I do like modern clowns like Sacha Baron Cohen and Mikel Murfi

Children will always cry and laugh at clowns in the same way that children will always cry and laugh while sitting on Santa's knee. As adults it's fashionable to be overly creeped out by clowns and yes, that's probably down in part to that fun loving Stephen King.
