Scandi noir/drama recommendations/discussion

@errant is the best person on here to ask about the Q series. :) I agree with Matt Dillon sounding a bit strange but it may work. I do like Uma Thurman a lot, though. And Lars von Trier movies in general.

Am two episodes from finishing series one of The Last Kingdom so have a bit of catching up to do but yes I like the series.

Talking Thure Lindhardt, have you watched his movie from a few years back where he plays a painter who moves to the middle of nowhere ? Can't remember it's tittle but 'Eddie' something.

I have Viaplay (they show every single Premiership game as well, which is what I mostly use it for) and would happily record and copy the series onto DVDs for you if you like. Though it won't have English subtitles, am afraid.
No I haven't seen him in anything else...that I'm aware of. He's in series 2 of The Last Kingdom, so far, even better than the first series. And I notice that 3096 days is on Netflix - which sounds heavy going!

Just had a look at Viaplay, the series isn't on there yet. But series one is on Netflix Denmark so I guess it will be on the UK version as well with series two added there, too ?

Was about to mention that one as well. He has been in a few international movies in recent years. He also had a part in one of the Da Vinci Code ones.

If you would like to see a different movie of his try this one (it also has one of our Scandi drama threads favourites in) :

He is a quite versatile actor and I rather like that he doesn't always just go for the safe bet roles. If am not mistaken he even had a small part in one of the Fast & Furious movies.

I hope so, but since I read that Viaplay have it six months before TV2 I was wondering if maybe they had global exclusive rights

About a handful of episodes into Ferang as well. Thus far a bit hit and miss but with the odd quality moment thrown in. Will stick with it for now but it isn't highest on my weekly telly watching list.

Veni Vidi Vici premieres this coming Thursday. Looking forward to that. It is said to be a wee bit naughty.

Having followed the lead of a poster on here and watched 6 (six) hours of Youtube videos on the man, I'm not about to watch a complete series based on the ex-leader of UKIP.

Watched The Team. Travelogue porn with way too many characters for me to remember so I got a bit lost. For some reason the dialogue never seems as convincing when it's in English. 6/10.

Follow the Money 2. Nearly stopped watching it after a few episodes as the treatment of the central financial theme was so simplistic it was nonsense. The way the lass with the facial mole was immediately accepted and then given a central role in the inner workings of a major bank was simply preposterous. The main attractions of scandi noir for me are the believable characters and absence of cliché. FTM2 fails on both scores.

Department Q is more watchable and I partiularly like the miserable lead actor and his dysfunctional relationship with his sidekick.

Just watched first episode of Eyewitness on Ch4 and it shows promise but I'm buggered if I can find when the next episode is broadcast.

Personally, up to now the first series of The Killing is the stand out. Sophie Grabol (sp?) was superb - a female Popeye Doyle -imperfect, driven, reckless even and very believable. I thought that the French version, The Disappearance was surprisingly good and definitely worth a watch.

The Bridge series are slightly tricksier but still very watchable. The Saga character is different, very attractive and her relationships with her male partners, both work and social, is a hoot.

I've had the same problem with Eyewitness. Apparently Channel 4 show one episode and then you are supposed to access the rest via the All 4 app. However - I don't seem to have this on Virgin tivo - More 4 for the last week only, but not All 4. So a bit irritated. I'll just have to watch Department Q instead.

Aye, I did a google seach on my phone and can access all of the episodes on all 4 but there's only the first one listed on sky's catch up.

I like watching programmes on the telly. Viewing on a tiny phone or even a tablet would drive me barmy.

Btw, thanks for the op.

Edit: I tried Hinterland. To me the noirish atmosphere seems contrived and where the Scandi offererings tend to be dark and compelling, Hinterland was just dismal and depressing.

I watched Hinterland too but I can't say I 'enjoyed' it. Rather a depressing watch. As you say, piling misery on top of misery was a bit much. No light and shade, just very dark and gloomy shade.

They've started doing the same thing with a few series. All in their Walter Presents strand.

Gidseltagningen however has potential to be shown everywhere and I reckon one of the first countries on the list to sign up for it will be the UK. But it is about terror on a metroline in Copenhagen and with the current wave of bad incidents across Europe, as interesting as the series is, it will be hard viewing for some people. It is filmed in a realistic, sometimes hand-held way which makes it scarier and harder to watch. And most of the characters are played by actors new to UK viewers, which may not be a bad thing. Only two episodes in but the series has kicked off nicely already. If you get a chance give it a go. Just not if you plan a ride on the metro the next day.

i had high hopes for Gidseltagningen when i first read about it, its got quite a stella production crew involved for nordic noir. im sure i'd read it was bought up by bbc4, however i've googled it again and can't find owt so perhaps it was wishful thinking. it still has at least one nod & a wink to previous scandi, with johannes lassen involved?

I've tivoed Department Q to watch later. Is it any good?

i love the q series, very much the film version of the bastard child of the killing & the bridge. i watched the 3rd one earlier this year and fares fares really takes over as the stronger more interesting character, with Nikolaj Lie Kaas's character's saga noren style personal life getting in the way of the story. still brilliant though, and moving... the first two are brilliant, and i'd highly recommend everyone watch at least one of them.

I'll be watching them over the Bank Holiday. Thanks!
