SAS: Rogue Heroes. Sunday, BBC1, 9PM

Just finished it.

Superb but I loved Ben’s book - in fact all of his books are great. And I read Operation Pedestal about the relief convoy to Malta.

But the music - come on what’s not to like Sabbath, AC/DC, Motörhead, Saxon

Have watched the first 3 and each one has got better as it goes. Very entertaining and the music is superb. Done a bit of Wikipedia research and surprised how true to real life events it is.

Watched the 3 part doc from which series based which was excellent, interviews with the actual proper tough SAS gadgees!

Are they all on iplayer?

I didn’t much like the filmed night scenes
I couldn’t see much other than gropey dark figures I know it was probably nearer to actual reality but I think some cinematic License should have been taken because I couldn’t follow the characters and plot.
The sound track is good but not perhaps historically accurate being the era of Glenn Miller , swing and Flannigan and Allan

I think you're allowed to have a soundtrack that's not historically accurate. It'd be a bit different if they had, for example, Bon Scott era AC/DC playing live in a 1941 Cairo nightclub, for example.

Got thru to s1 ep6.
The action scenes are embarrassingly bad and corny
Will continue watching future episodes as it's an easy watch if you don't take it seriously.
More holes in it than a tramp's vest but it's ok light entertainment

The Cairo bits get me. Did the heads of intelligence really just wander about and meet in public with impunity? Did the Axis not employ spies and assassins of their own?

I have this book and yes it’s gripping. It’s amazing what people did during the war because they had to. I sort of knew the end, I mean I knew some vessels got through, but I didn’t know the details of the Ohio. Some of the photos in this book are amazing.
And as a dull afterword, my copy just bought at Waterstones is signed by Max Hastings.

Patrick Bishop writes a good WW2 book too. Bomber Boys, Figter Boys, The raid on Dieppe, Target Tirpitz to name 4.

Finished it tonight. Great watch and really well done with the music and such. I thought it was produced extremely cleverly.

Just finished episode 2 and will watch episode 3 now before kip.

Enjoying it so far. Agree it is on the mildly comedic side of corny at times but that's fine by me.

Looking forward to see how it pans out.

I think the reality was even more bizarre and extreme.

Obviously things have been changed to be more cinematic but they were highly unusual individuals and the times drove extremes of behaviour.

It's been decent so far but some of the casting let's it down a bit.

The French paratroop regiment that were supposed to be a bunch of unmanageable reprobates looked more like the cast of It Ain't Half Hot Mum'.

Couldn't they have recruited some ex-French Foreign Legion types? At least they would have looked the part.

Not that good apart from the soundtrack. Seen 4, will probably watch the remaining episodes but wouldn't be bothered if I couldn't.

I’m enjoying it, the accompanying podcast on bbc sounds is canny too
