simplistic or not hes our only chance

He's not man.....our CM is largely non existent and our defenders just lump it forward to Defoe's head from where it comes straight back to us. If that was Anichebe central (or someone similar with a better goals record) with Borini and a new signing on the other side (say Naismith) plus improvements to CM and defence we may well be a more effective team.

if u expect any money coming in to be spent I think you are in for a shock

Again that's too simplistic.....it depends entirely on who replaces him and whether that allows Moyes to implement a formation that makes us more effective overall. We may have seen the best of Defoe and I doubt we will get a second chance to sell at a profit.
For the fee we'd get for him there's almost no chance we'd find a player who makes us more effective. We know he can score goals, would be a risk buying someone. It's not like we could afford a proven replacement.

Way I see it is we keep him and try and stay up. If we go down, he'll most probably leave in the summer - he'll probably have to accept a one year deal at another prem club though.
If we stay up he'll see how his last 2 years of his contract here.

Yup, that 5m will get us another squad.

Of course they will be. I'm not naive enough to think we're going to spend like we did last January. However replacing Defoe would cost more than selling him would save, it would make no sense what so ever.

As I keep pointing out though we are hamstrung wages wise by FFP and the only way around this is to remove some and/or generate player profit. As regards Defoe it just depends on whether you believe it's possible to improve the team OVERALL if he and/or others are moved on.

If we do nothing we will go down imo....

sell defoe and its the same scenario

I honestly think if it happens it would be against Moyes wishes. I have feeling Bain will do something unpopular this January. Not even the most staunch defender of Short could positively spin the selling of Defoe.
cant believe after all the sales we still find ourselves harping on about ffp rules , bar defoe I would sell any other player on the books

The thread title is about Defoe AND Kone......£25m in fees and £15m in commercial revenue to offset FFP rules. Once the space for new wages is available the club may even add to that £25m.....£30-35m could (if spent wisely) significantly strengthen the team overall.

We have another two or three saleable assets. Kone, Kahzri and Pickford would generate more cash and free up chunk of wages.

Where have you plucked that figure from..?

Bain and Moyes won't sign better players than Defoe and Kone even if they'll have those astronomical/non realistic figures to spend.

I wouldn't sell Defoe on his own.....that would be absolutely pointless but in conjunction with Kone it could make sense. Defoe will be worth less every window where Pickford could conceivably be worth more every window. We couldn't give Khazri away currently.....he's f***ing useless this season.

Astronomical?........£18m for Kone and £6m for Defoe.....perfectly reasonable numbers those.
