Russia invading Ukraine (NEWS/UPDATES)

There are a lot of people worth ignoring on Twitter. Military bloggers, journalists who have interviewed Putin once or twice, drama queens etc…

He clearly isn’t one of them. He is a professor who has spent his entire career working in Russia. He advised Boris Yeltsin how to win the 1996 election and ultimately became US ambassador to Russia.

He will have a huge diplomatic network within Putins inner circle as well as Russian academics etc.. he will also know far better then anyone on this board what Russia’s nuclear command and control structure is actually like and any checks and balances on Putin.

I think it’s a million miles away from being an imminent Western concern but it’s interesting he has even felt confident enough to tweet that and being who it’s from it does suggest that those around Putin are concerned by his behaviour (Which you can pick up from videos of him with his generals anyway)
You can't predict what people in an irrational state of mind will do. That's the whole problem.

Imo the time for NATO to put boots on the ground was pre crisis - as others have said.

It would be too dangerous to get involved now .

We should be arming the Ukranians- but keeping out for now - much as it pains me to say that.

Public opinion is very much turning against Putin (.even more when they find out 6000+ of their boys ( est) are already dead and gone. If he draws NATO in he can paint us as aggressor and get public behind him

The goal now should be regime change from inside Russia - probably enacted by either military men / Oligrachs (.or both) .

Mikhail Khordokovsky gives 2 years max before revolution / or Putin deposed

So we keep on turning off the financial taps ( including All oil & gas imports from Russia) and wait for it to implode

He will need to spend $ billions to keep the Ukranians in line - and we hold into a big chunk of Russian money to.pay for the eventual reparations

Brave of you to suggest that those of us who are serving can go over. If that call came then of course id do my duty - but it is always people sat safely in their homes who shout the loudest.

"Serving" as what? Professional, trained soldiers?

I'd consider that as more "sensible" than "brave" on my part. I wouldn't advocate that we send the baristas or the hairdressers in. It's not their job and it's not what they've been specifically employed and trained for.

You are off ignore  and I 100% agree. This stinks. No idea why Abramovich can sell Chelsea even though he is giving it all away.

Someone commented elsewhere that Roman Abramovich has actually sanctioned himself, because the government aren’t capable/don’t want to.

Hard to argue with that really.

Surely even Boris wouldn't have the bare faced cheek to do that.

With the amount of Russian money here (as I said the other day 60% of all russian GDP is offshore, much in London) he's actively sabotaging the war effort and potentially sending millions of Ukrainians to their death, all for 10k a year.

Always shocks me just how cheap it is to bribe our politicians.

While this is the sensible view, it does feel like we watching a bully attack someone and just standing there in case we get hurt. I get that we need to look after ourselves but it doesn't sit right.

When all this is over there needs to be a detailed forensic investigation going all the way back to break up of Soviet Union and nail the crooks. Including anyone who got far too much for far too little from any one tainted with dirty money.

Time for a clean sweep.

I agree, but do you really have any faith in it happening?

On a semi related, domestic note - we still haven’t seen the Russia Report.

That surely needs an emergency debate in the House of Commons.

Looks like utter hypocrisy.

Inside it is a large phone that he would use to call the military to start the process. Its not a button.

Radiolab (who i think are great) do a podcast on this.

Not their most exciting podcast but given the scenario at the minute, people may find it interesting.

interviews people in the chain of command for nuclear war
