Russia invading Ukraine (NEWS/UPDATES)

The Nuclear Secrest series on BBC back in 2007 was an interesting watch. There were 5 episodes and the 1st episode was about Oleg Penkovsky passing on secrets to the US during the Cuban Missile Crisis.

It's mad how close it came and thankfully people like the ones mentioned helped stop it happen. No doubt there's stuff going on now that we aren't aware about and probably never will!

One of my wife’s relatives was a Soviet spy. Quite a famous case. He ended up dying in a mysterious car accident many years later. I won’t post the name publicly but happy to share as it’s an interesting story

And how many Russians will die in tjis fight
20 thousand ?
50k ?
Possibly more as they get drawn into street fighting with 10 million Ukranian fighters - men , women , boys , outsiders who are arriving from many differing places

There is a groundswell of unrest in Russia - from the young , from the rich , and from the middle class who fear another iron curtain.

Putin isn't getting out If This one alive I think

A monumental miscalculation

But yes we coukd see a lot of dead ukranians before this is done

Every single military streategist and foreign policy expert I’ve heard on this, can’t make any sense whatsoever of what he’s doing.

Clearly, he thought he’d waltz in to Kyiv. That was, as we can see, a massive miscalculation from the off. But when/if he takes Kyiv, and whatever the cost, then what? The Ukrainian people will still fight, and the govt will relocate to the west. Does he therefore head west across one of the biggest countries in continental Europe, chasing the rightful elected govt? At what cost and how long will that take?

Then - even if he “conquers” all of Ukraine, and installs a puppet govt - what next? As soon as Russian troops leave the people of Ukraine will oust that govt. so does he leave his army in Ukraine indefinitely? It’s an enormous country of 41,000,000 hostile people. How many troops will he need to leave there to police that? It’s simply not sustainable.

Nee one is getting nuked ffs

I hope not, but I’ve been thinking about my doomsday plan for many years….. if something were to kick off whilst I’m at work in Newcastle, and if sufficient warning time, I can make it in about five minutes to either St James or Central Metro stations. First choice would be St James, tunnels would offer a bit protection. A lot of concrete! Also Haymarket Metro is also option for duck and cover, end of platform (jesmond-Monument) there is an old archive storage room, pretty solid.

Obviously the nuclear threat is a bit of a concern but I’m interested in who is really worried demographic wise. I’m wondering if growing up in 70’s and 80’s with a much more obvious Cold War than we’ve seen for a long time, films like war games, threads and when the wind blows and the whole escalation of arms race, Star Wars programme and so on has meant I’m much more relaxed about it than people only a few years younger who have mostly grown up post glasnost/ fall of Berlin Wall.
Well apparently there have been 16 nuclear close calls in my lifetime from 1956 to 1995.

I suppose we grew up with it as a constant threat but I can understand younger people experiencing it for the first time to be afraid.

I don't think we will see nukes fired though.

We need one man to go and kill Putin. Even if it is Boris Johnson, turn up to 'peace talks', arm Boris and Boris shoots Putin dead. Gets out of there swift and then real peace talks can happen.

Putin gone, Britain united, Boris would be more popular than Churchill.

I remember those days...
