Russia invading Ukraine (NEWS/UPDATES)

Releasing convicts to fight whilst not allowing males 18-60 leave the country and you're telling me the Russians are the ones with all the problems?

It's either a conclusive Russia victory and a puppet state is formed or Ukraine gives territory in the east to Russia.

Sounds like Ukraine are on a total war footing, that sounds more like Russia's problem than Ukraine's.

Time decay only favours the Ukrainians, war is about attrition and the Russians are getting weaker faster with their isolation and economic problems.

Ukraine has won it's first battle, to still be on a good footing 72 hours into the invasion.

Read a really interesting piece on Russian re and then de-armament last night

Basically around the turn of the decade Russia was undergoing a really thorough and effective reform of its military. But it was too effective for Putin who purged the guy responsible.

His replacement and current head of the military is a) not a slav so and b) understands to keep his job he needs to be popular, so when he came in and he basically neutered the military which was scaring Putin and has kept it under thumb for that reason since

Second point it made was that Putin has managed multiple "special operations" successfully which is modern innuendo for war, but nonetheless its always been against separatists and interest groups.

This is a traditional clauswitzian land war closer to the sort fought in WW2. As a comparison when Hitler invaded Poland there were three echelons- one to take ground as soon as possible and then two two secure it and supply lines immediately afterwards.

This Rusdian offence has one echelon in its entirety.

Surely any thoughts of simple regime change are out of the question now, they'll have to occupy Ukraine and face an insurgency for a long time. Ultimately Putin can only be thinking that Ukraine will cease to exist and be incorporated into Russia.

Russia has 13k tanks. Drop in the ocean to them.

"had" 1.3k tanks, now more like 1.2k tanks...

it's a decent loss in 5 days. many armies would struggle to cope with that loss. those tanks (their spot in the line) have to be replaced so the regiments they were in can still function effectively. maybe even the regiments themselves need to be replaced with the reserves depending on how concentrated those losses are.
they do have those, for now.

What a load of crap, it's a thread about Russia invading Ukraine and not just a free for all posting any old political crap due to their own personal political opinions or the petty personal poster attacks towards each other.

I think most of us get it, Johnson is a **** and the refugee offering isn't anywhere as good as other countries (bearing in mind someone mentioned Ukraine didn't want them going to far so they could return easily) but to see it constantly regurgitated isn't what we want to see repeated.

Many people in this thread and no doubt many more lurkers who don't even post in the Politics forum will be looking for updates on the latest news on whether this shit is going to escalate even further. The Boris/Brexit/Tory etc bitching posts along with needless tit for tat doesn't really help them does it? Surely you've seen the numerous posts about people who come to this thread to get updates so why can't people not help other posters with valuable input into the thread rather than hinder it?

As you see, I've edited my post as there are 2 other threads about 2 subjects that keep being commented on here and cause friction but here they are again for those who missed my edit.

I don't think it is possible to seperate out the events in the Ukraine from what has been happening politically

Russians interference in Ukraine and Belarus, putting in place puppet regimes was part of a pattern of interference in British and American politics over the last decade.

This isn't something that came out of the blue. It has been building for 10 years, daft to try and pretend that those events are seperate from what we are seeing now

Apart from China, can’t imagine many countries have the finance to buy their gold?

According to The Economist it would be disposed of in the Dubai bullion market. The one thing you have to accept is that financial markets are completely immoral. They don't give a flying fuck as long as it makes them money. One of the largest share price increases this morning was in a German radar maker which went up 90% on news that the German government is to spend an extra €100bn on defence. War is highly profitable.......for some.

Yep fully agree, see my previous post lol… the T80 is Russian most advanced tank…. Maybe on par with the challenger 2 …. (I’d still rather have a challenger 2 though)
However we’ve already seen numerous T80/T72’s destroyed and broke down in ditches etc….
Massive losses for the Russians
