Russia invading Ukraine (NEWS/UPDATES)

I condemn anyone who is involved on NATO's side in egging this on, when it was likely avoidable. I condemn Putin for invading. I would prefer a negotiated settlement, with Russia pulling out. I do not think it's possible for Russia to 'win' in any real sense. If I was in the Russian hierarchy, I would consider getting rid of Putin. What I can't stand though, is the hipocrisy being shown, as if the likes of UK / US have some moral high ground, have never invaded a sovereign country and never killed masses of civilians.

The invasion was not “egged on” by NATO - not sure what you think they did. So what if Ukraine was considering joining NATO. Russia may not have liked it but hey, Ukraine were free to do what they liked and that is no excuse for an invasion and the atrocities being committed.

I don’t recall the US/UK invading a sovereign (watch your keyboard doesn’t wear out) country which was democratic and not posing any threat to anyone.

It was right to stop Saddam gassing the Kurds and killing his own people. It was right to try and remove the Taliban. It was right to try and stop ethnic cleansing in the Balkans. They are not comparable to the invasion of Ukraine.

More comparable is saying that what Russia has done would be akin to the UK invading Ireland due to a “timeline” and the IRA and destroying Irish cities.

This is the first war to be played out on social media and I just think all of this wrong. Our "world" is fucked, Brooker style fucked.
I’m dreading / curious to see what Death to 2022 is like (death to 2021 was bad enough with all that happened)

The Joint STARS doing laps over Poland now makes sense.

Gather evidence of what is on the ground to be able to challenge the attack being Ukrainian origin.

I doubt the Russians care mind even if it’s blatant. Lukashenko will do whatever Putin asks as otherwise he will be spending his days in prison. Or being it’s Belarus potentially facing a firing squad

The NATO thing is a red herring used by Russia, one of the requirements to join NATO is that the country can't currently be at war. Since 2014, Ukraine have been at war with....Russia!

It wouldn't be unreasonable to suggest Russia don't actually expect Ukraine to join NATO and are just using it as an excuse. Russia, like @Roker Skate , have flip flopped between about 10 different reasons for invading.

Ahhhhhh, good old whataboutery.
You say whataboutery. I find that term puerile. If you're up in arms at civilians being killed in Ukraine, then you should be up in arms about them being killed elsewhere.

Alternatively, if you're not up in arms about them being killed in Ukraine, you shouldn't care about them being killed elsewhere. That seems more consistent with the Russian attitude.

I'm not sure what everyone is debating here is the deaths. It's the invasion itself. It's fundamentally wrong even if nobody died, and this thread is about Ukraine.

But that's what it is, whataboutery. If you ran a quick poll, I reckon the vast majority of people on here wouldn't be happy with the civilian deaths in Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan and numerous other places, that doesn't mean we can't be pissed off about Putin indiscriminately killing people. Many of us won't have been happy about the actions of the UK and US over the years but, again, that doesn't somehow diminish the scale of the current issue in Ukraine.

Why are you not up in arms about women and children being killed in Ukraine, which you can't be or you wouldn't use deflections to diminish those who are?

My keyboard is fine (watch your own arrogance doesn't explode).

Well let's see what negotiations took place in the years, months weeks prior to the invasion?

Who deems who 'is posing a threat to anyone'.

Should Myanmar have been invaded for posing a threat to Rohingyas?

What about China? Should they be invaded? They pose a threat to a number of their population.

Regarding these invasions that were right.. over 7000 civilians killed during first two months of Shock and Awe. But they don't count because they weren't killed by Russians?

People like you frighten me.

Why would a country with a depleted air force go use its limited resources to attack Belarus instead of the invading Russians is off the scale in terms of absurdness. I would like to think this could somehow get through to the Belarussians and initiate an uprising there.
