I don't know what you mean by just in case. You've introduced that phrase and it seems to mean something to you, but nothing to me.

I have never implied taking no action; I don't know why you have inferred that. I am suggesting declaring war on Russia, which is what shooting down one of their planes amounts to, is a terrible idea as it would be us starting ww3.
There is always the chance of Russian aggression on nato, you can’t take that one off the table.

I know talks are going on which would be a plus point for now, no one wants world wars 3,

A no fly zone is a huge grey area because nato would have to shoot any missile or plane down which could cause war, if they didn’t shoot they could risk an attack from the Russians.

I can see why peoples emotions are flying all over like

I feel any troops on ground etc would need to be done under the UN and not nato.

At the moment it’s a Mexican stand off.

Radar and IFF
IFF (identification Friend or Foe) is the transponder

Basically every aircraft has to have one, but only respond to the correct interrogation signal. Military aircraft all have them, and can be set to respond to every interrogation or only respond to allies in a war situation to avoid friendly fire instances.

Radar generally identifies "something", IFF asks the target what it is/who are you, and then it responds with info. If it doesn't then it's either got a faulty IFF preventing it responding, they've turned it off so it can't respond, or it's an enemy aircraft that won't respond to you, cos you don't have the correct identifying signal telling it you're a "friend". At that point a whole sequence of events is triggered to work out what it is and whether it's a danger or not

if transponders are on then everyone knows where you're at

if they're off then you only know whos around you by turning on your radar, but the other side can detect your radar emissions - so if you can see them then they can see you (we'll ignore stealth in this case)

so the trick is to have an AWACS flying around (those rivet-joint planes you might have seen) - they'll be continually scanning on their radars and feeding locations of everything they find to friendlies via datalink - which is why if you see one of those on flightradar you should be wondering how many buddies does he have flying with him with their transponders off

and yes, civilian aircraft will have basic radar

The transponders aren't turned off, they just won't respond to any interrogation signal that isn't identified as a friend.

I'm not suggesting we do nothing in case it provokes them. But shooting down their plane is an act of war and is escalating things. We would certainly consider it that if they shot down one of our planes.

I think you could help shoot down missiles. No Russians die from that and Israel seem pretty good at it. I think they have some gear to do that as they've managed to shoot down helicopters and planes using SAMs from what I can tell.
