radarForgive my ignorance but how do other aircraft know who's about them if they've all got their transponders off?

Thats a false dichotomy. Us declaring war on him is MAD.You best be prepared to give Putin anything he wants then because thats a threat he is going to continue to use now. So unless there is no red line and he can do what he wants, the West will have to call his bluff at some stage

EDIT - Twitter suggests it's off to Moldova
Just watched their mates get slaughtered too, the worst thing a soldier can be is poorly trained, fear can bring out the best and worst out in a person but being inadequate in training is worse than fear.Dissent in the ranks? Two different sources suggesting that something is amiss. Maybe linked or different
Maybe Antony Blinken is off to Moldova for talks? He's been in Poland today.tracking that one now

Usa keep a keen eye on everything, people slagging them off a lot but well if the shit hits the fan they will be the major players here. People forget that.
this is heading to moldova now
So the Russians will know they are there, it's just private individuals following planes on the likes of flight radar that won't? What about civilian aircraft?radar
Radar and sonar can detect planes in the no fly zone. But enforcing it would need the arbiter of the nfz (ie NATO) to provide planes to enforce it. You know that. There isn’t a “no fly zone in place. Quite a few military aircraft have crossed Ukraines eastern borders:

A look at some military activity in airspace around Ukraine | Flightradar24 Blog
Plenty of military aircraft are visible on Flightradar24 in the vicinity of Ukraine. Here's a look at what we've seen and what they might be up to.www.flightradar24.com
There is always radar, sonar, etc etc
Now you can answer my question, that you’ve just dodged again.
Radar and IFFForgive my ignorance but how do other aircraft know who's about them if they've all got their transponders off?
I don't know what you mean by just in case. You've introduced that phrase and it seems to mean something to you, but nothing to me.By all means.
The implication of your reply to me is that you don’t want allied action against Russia, for fear that Russia may launch a nuclear weapon. The logical extension of that is surely that Putin would effectively have carte blanche to do almost anything anywhere - as an argument could least be made that allowing him to do [whatever it is], would be better than a nuclear exchange.
To put it another way - what sort of situation would need to develop, before “just in case” became a risk we should take?
i do, and i'm not sure its the panacea that people appear to think it is
for reasons that i cant quite fathom (Russian ineptitude maybe) - Ukraine appear to be doing very well in the air part of this war
a no-fly zone means enforcing a keep out for both sides, no planes, no drones (no missiles??) - if you try to be sneaky and enforce it for one side only then you've gone from escalation, to f*ck me escalation
a one-sided no-fly zone is'nt a no-fly zone, its a declaration of war
I don't know what you mean by just in case. You've introduced that phrase and it seems to mean something to you, but nothing to me.
I have never implied taking no action; I don't know why you have inferred that. I am suggesting declaring war on Russia, which is what shooting down one of their planes amounts to, is a terrible idea as it would be us starting ww3.
It said Moscow was particularly worried that portable anti-aerial Stinger missiles could end up in the hands of terrorists, posing a threat to airlines.
Putin needs to put a bullet in his own brain more like ….pissed is a good place to be imo , Putin needs to have a good drink and put a bit tamla motown on his record player and chill the fuck out
Agreed, but there is a difference between monitoring and enforcing.Radar and sonar can detect planes in the no fly zone. But enforcing it would need the arbiter of the nfz (ie NATO) to provide planes to enforce it. You know that.

Yes, and an NFZ is not really an NFZ if it is not enforced. That’s why NATO don’t want to do it because Putin says he will go mad if they do.…
Agreed, but there is a difference between monitoring and enforcing.
