So what? If the underlying ethical dilemma is that standing up to Putin directly would risk nuclear war, a piece of paper doesn’t alter the situation at all. The argument for not doing anything would be exactly the same as it is now.

Spot on. And this is what people are still seemingly failing to grasp. We are at a stage now where it’s total appeasement to him or challenge and risk.

Because the key thing here is if he is willing to use them he is willing to accept the consequences of a second strike.ie he is beyond the point of rational deterrence

Well nuclear war is never going to happen anyway (it is the complete opposite to what Putin wants to achieve) but I would rather die or live in a decimated Britain knowing we tried to defend the free world, than live in a world governed by tyranny and oppression.

How far west through Europe would you be happy for Putin or another dictator to get through before saying enough is enough?

If Putin invaded Britain and said he would nuke us if we tried to stop him, what would you think?
Tyranny and oppression always comes to an end eventually, empires come and go and have throughput history. Escalation to point of nuclear war removes the opportunity for our children and grandchildren to create a better world.

You best be prepared to give Putin anything he wants then because thats a threat he is going to continue to use now. So unless there is no red line and he can do what he wants, the West will have to call his bluff at some stage

If he starts to lose Ukraine he’ll use some big fuck off bomb on them

He’s not going away here unless they give up

Grow up. There is no dilemma. If Putin invades a NATO member, NATO will respond. Ukraine is not a member so any show of force will be as illegal as Putins actions. 2 wrongs don’t make a right. The “west” must do all it can with regards to sanctions and censure, but will not wade in to start WW3 just to please keyboard warriors like you.

He will nuke them. Where does that leave us.
NATO might have privately warned Russia if they use Nuclear weapons then we'll have to get involved, with what all that entails. I feel that without this threat the temptation for the Russians would too much for them not to use them.

Or option A: the imposed sanctions work and there is a de-escalation by Putin/ internal coup.

It doesn’t have to come to that ultimatum and there’s growing evidence the actions which have been taken to date are becoming effective.
What’s unfortunate is the loss of life in Ukraine in the short term.
This is my view at the moment. Ideally Russia, one way or another, decides themselves to put an end to the war

I don't mean to be condescending but you do not appear to have any idea what the Nato agreement is or who the members are. Given that Nato membership and it's movement eastwards is the underlying reason Putin is doing what he is you might benefit from reading up on the history, growth, Article 5.

I get that this is a discussion board and all are welcome to make their opinions known but you might have a better understanding of the geopolitical situation if you go and do some research on Nato. There are most likely some short Youtube videos that explain all about it.

It would be illegal for allied forces to enter Ukrainian territory, at the formal request of an elected Ukrainian government? Really?

And you’re seriously telling me that reservations about direct conflict with Putin - on the grounds that such a conflict may end up nuclear - magically wouldn’t apply if it were a NATO ally that’s attacked? Again, really?

And I need to “grow up”?

You’re on a roll here mind.
