He didn't spend much while in this league mind, what he did was get mates and players who played at the same clubs as him in (same as Moyes tried to do) but Keane got lads who could still do a job in that division. No doubt once we went up and he tried to push us on he failed, down to the fact the expensive players wouldn't give that extra 10% his mates would for him.
Just like to add that regardless of my love of Keane he wouldn't have got anything extra out of these cowards, I would go as far to suggest they would have cried off to the PFA when he got stuck into them for pissing about like fannies.
