Ross Stewart

But that's part of the problem.

Do we buy one striker to compete with RS and bring Hemir through as he's still basically a kid and one for the future?

Or do we bring in two strikers if RS has his mind set on leaving?

Only RS and his leech, sorry agent, know what his intentions are. Personally, I think he'll run his contract down and leave for free and the proverbial ' pay day '. He's fully entitled to of course, but the less he and his agent say ( nowt, currently! ) the more I believe he'll be off for more money.

I just hope we have replacements in the pipeline to keep our momentum going.
Well I am sure Speakman and Harvey will be fully aware of what’s going on with his agent. He’s still going with the’ confident he’ll sign’ line which I think Donald used to say with Maja. To be honest I’ve accepted he’s off next season unless we offer what both him and his agent want but even they are more likely to get a big some if he’s available on a free.

Or, he eventually gets fit & doesn’t make a real impression this season. Then you’re left with a player who’s had a purple patch for 13 matches & never played at a higher level than the Championship. Commanding £20k-£30k would be extremely difficult for a 28 year old with little potential resale value.

Obviously he could come back & be mint. I think we’re also remembering the play off victory with fondness too. Great season on paper, we were lucky he stayed fit & ran him into the ground, but there were two very specific periods, before Christmas & April time where he was flat. Luckily for us, Cambridge when he got a penalty & another goal seemed to lift him for the play offs. But he wasn’t on top form for 46 matches.

What we’ve all got fresh in our minds was that he was excellent for 13 matches last season.

Basically this injury has fucked him. The fact he’s not going to be ready for the start of the season means it’s unlikely someone will offer decent money we’d accept as a transfer fee. So it’s going on whether he comes back & plays well, or even appears physically fit.

Progression wise, right now, he’s not going to get a Premier League opportunity, so it comes to hoping he gets a big contract from another Championship club & hoping they’re in a better position than us in the next year or two. Imagine not committing, sitting in the Championship whilst your old club go up & are paying Premier League wages? Could happen.

Happened to Wyke.
As the late, great Meatloaf would have sung " You took the words right out of my mouth " .

Right now, I'm starting to think of RS as our very own version of Darren ' SickNote' Anderson.

Everyone is blaming his agent or RS.

What if it's the club or a mutual agreement?

Think about it from the club's point. There employee is not able to work so giving him a new contract or pay rise isn't sensible at present.

When he is fit & scoring goals again then contract is signed. They could maybe backdate payments or bonuses? 🤔
Professional football is a bit of a cattle market & no one is going to pay out a lot of cash for Stewart's services - including SAFC - until its clear that he's fully fit and back to scoring goals. It's a bit cruel but I am sure that he is well aware that as he has been out for several months that's how things work. In the past SAFC has signed players who were still recovering from injury only to discover when they were fit enough to play that they had lost their touch. It's an expensive and daft risk to take.

I don't doubt that in Stewart's case by Xmas a whole bunch of clubs will be fighting tooth and nail get him signed. That's when he will have got back to full fitness got a decent number of games under his belt and knocked in a few more goals.

When we are at that stage I will be delighted if a number of teams are very keen to have him - after all who wants players that other clubs wouldn't touch with a barge pole? The trick is just making sure that when that time comes he stays with SAFC.

Ive said all along that this summer we should be signing someone as good or better than him.

1) Because he might not actually recover properly and the new good striker will be needed to get us top 6 again.
2) Because he needs rested more often even if he gets back to 100% so we need quality for when he isnt playing.
3) As he may well leave anyway so we would already have the replacement.
4) Because we want to get better anyway and there is still huge room for improvent from our current position to say for example Brightons position as our long term aspiration.
Yet you said we should have given him an improved contract about 5 posts up from this one? Make your mind up.

Why do so many posters think a player is the club’s personal property or even the fans’ personal property to be sold at will?
The transfer of a player is not like selling a second hand car.

The club have the contractual right to keep Stewart for another season. They are not obliged to offer him another contract beyond that. Of course they will because they want him to stay. However, there are other players that will be discarded at the end of their contracts without any further liability to the club. Winchester is an example of such a player.

If Ross wants to see his contract out then leave that is his prerogative. He is not duty bound to make millions for the club owners.

The transfer price of a player should be no more than what a club is bound to pay him.
Exactly but it is also the clubs prerogative to listen to any offers if they so chose, if a suitable offer comes in and he can make a deal he’s happy with then he goes.

then there is the constructive ways to persuade a player his future lies elsewhere But that’s a different discussion.

player value is like house prices, only ever worth what someone is prepared to pay.
eg someone offers 10m and will give him 30k a week deal gets done.
Someone offers 2m and 30k a week it gets knocked back because he’s worth more to us than that even if it is for 2/3 of a season.

my point stands as far as I am concerned if he won’t commit then listen to offers no guarantee the deal will get done but it opens another option to the saga, I’m sure someone will give him what he or his agent thinks he’s worth It’s just how much remuneration we get in return.

doing no one any good this dragging on.

No one is bigger than the club especially not Ross Stewart! Let’s not forget Lyndon Dukes was stopping him getting a game for Scotland!

Let's just see if he comes back the player he used to be first, before throwing more money at him. He's been out that long, it's probably just as easy for him to pick up another injury as it is him coming back fit and firing.

I'm sure he'll have to prove himself before any new offer is put to him, by that time two other strikers could be making a big impact on the season and he could be further down the pecking order than expected. I want Stewart to stay, but I think the club are right to move on with the kind of strikers linked.

Just let him see his contract out. He'll have to play hard to get himself a decent deal - and by next summer we may well be in the position where the pecking order has changed anyway - and may need to adjust.

Footballers (like most people) are mercenaries. If he doesn't want to play for us then - like many before him - it's good riddance as far as I'm concerned. I'm betting that he's played for his biggest ever club.

He'll be here until he's not 🤷‍♂️

Players do what's best for themselves, it's a job. Saying we're better off rid or good riddance is daft. His replacement will come in and do the same. I hope he stays, he's a great player, but he's going to leave some day and like any player I'm confident we'll replace him when he does.
