Ross Stewart

Interesting comments from Mowbray. Basically it looks like there’s a big gap between our current offer and RS demands. Hopefully both parties will have a desire to meet somewhere in the middle.

If not he’ll have to be sold in the summer. I don’t think we’d even get top dollar for him as clubs will know there’s the potential to hang on and get him for free. Puts the club in a tough position next season. Do they play him knowing he’s off or freeze him out so he wastes a year and his ability to get a big contract falls away.

I'm hoping for a new contract, with a big release clause. My fear is he will turn it down and we will be forced to sell for about £6-8million in the summer.

I don't blame him. He might only have this one chance of a life changing contract, if he goes for a low fee or even in a free the following year, he will be able to command £25k a week, 4 year contract.
Not sure why people always want release clauses inserted into contracts. It would be in our interests for there not to be one.

If Stewart was going on a free, he'd be getting far more than 25k per week. The top end championship players on frees in the summer were talking about 40-50k per week.

If there is PL interest, it could well be that Stewart is already wanting 50k. Who knows? If the club can already employ him on his current contract at say 5k per week, for the next 18 months, you can see why they might not be that keen to pay him x10 the amount for the same period. All speculation but not sure why the club are getting stick for this at the moment.

Stewart has to consider that he is a first team regular here and is well respected and supported by the fans. Sometimes the grass isn’t greener. Money is one thing but he could end up a squad player at a Premier League club fighting for survival come April and with a lean spell in front of goal against better defenders, fans can soon turn. He may reflect fondly at his time at Sunderland. However, I understand that players are lured by money and the challenge of playing at a higher level. If he’s after a big money deal and a new challenge, the club need to make sure we get the top price and then find the next young Ross Stewart.

We'd very likely get more for him in January than in the summer.
I'm not convinced. He's only played about 6 championship games in his career. If he does it for the next 6 months, different ball park figures.

Stewart will be off. He's 26 now, was rumoured to be on a couple of grand a week last season. He won't even be a millionaire.

This next contract is huge for him. Will dictate his entire life tbh.

Yes, but buyers are most desperate in January, and he's got longer left on his contract. We're not going to get a massive fee in the summer when he's got less than 12 months left on his contract, and teams have time to plan.

If he comes back after the WC and hits the ground running again, I'm sure we'll get some late January bids from PL sides trying to stay up. Financially, that's the best time to sell him. It's not the best time in footballing terms though, obviously. It would probably derail our season. We'd need have a replacement ready to go immediately if we sell him.

We'll soon find out.

We'd have to find a way to replace him quickly if that happened. Not ideal.

Why not give him a decent deal for the next 2 & half seasons. I can't see how giving him a good championship wage for a couple of years will cripple the club tbh. If he wants a release clause set it about 15, that way if he feels like he wants to leave he has a way out.

No doubt his current deal won't be up to much we did get him from a struggling Scottish club and gave him League one wages. He is our most important player and deserves a wage to match that.

I do feel if we have to invoke this option at the end of the season, he'll be pushing for a move elsewhere and with one year left on his deal and an unhappy player the club will accept a much lower offer for him.

I would think that club may have a January deadline for a new contract, to avoid that situation. We either agree a new deal by then, or we'll look at the markets and see if we can flog him for a large fee to a desperate PL team.

They've been talking about a new contract for Stewart for about 6 months. If he hasn't signed it by January, then he's not likely to be staying imo. We're either worlds apart with him on the contract requirements, or he's keen to see what's out there and doesn't want to tie himself down

He's not really had a big contract yet in his career and is he about 27? Was always going to hold out for the best offer imo. Disappointing the club aren't likely to get close to matching his demands.

I wonder if there's a chance he could go in January?

I'm assuming the plan will be to do a Brentford after selling Watkins and benrahma for big money. Build a side with the cash that can get promoted.

We won't know whether it will work until it happens. I can genuinely see both sides of this. We have to get it right if we reinvest his fee
I agree but the fee we’d get for him would be nothing like the fees that they got for either of those players. Especially with how short his contract currently is.

He'd do well to check out Maja's progress since e left us.

It’s a tough one cos he absolutely deserves a pay rise but if the club have a structure then they have to stick to it. However they managed to get jack Clarke and roberts in from PL contracts so it the wage budget should be decent for this level.

I think if we were offered upwards of £10m in jan and he’s hinted he won’t sign a new deal then a move could certainly be an option.

They should pay him a tad more than the going rate ,put him on a three or four year contract and look at it as an investment in the club’s future.

Alternatively be held to ransom buying someone to replace him.

Unfortunately I think we all know how this will pan out.

Short term gain.

We are a selling club.

When we go up we need to offer him a decent wedge.

If for whatever reason we don't get promoted he will want to be away. If we get a decent wedge for him so be it.

I don't think it was in the plan to get promoted this year. I believe the plan is to build a young squad capable of promotion next season.

Speakman and Co have done well in the market up to now, those punters giving it we need another striker/ controlling midfielder blah blah we have a budget FFS!! Nobody could have foreseen the injuries we have had.

Im happy with the way it's going, if we go up great, if we don't the plan is on course.

Chill people, we are on course, it's going to plan.

I'm.not sure our overall wage budget is that great mate. Most clubs have owner funding to boost what they can pay and It doesn't appear we have this luxury at the moment. I suspect our wage budget is currently in the bottom 6-8 for teams in the championship.

He’s on 2 grand a week here.

He needs to think about making a living for himself and being comfortable after football

If he’s offered 20 grand a week to sit on the bench of a Orem club for a couple of year he will snap their hands off and who can blame him?

2 grand a week is a f***ing insult if true
