Ross Stewart - unlucky? Or a bullet dodged?

We paid £350,000 for him and got £10,000,000 and he played a huge role in us going up a level.

Thats what I call a great buy in the first place and a cracking sell, given nobody knows whether he can return from the injury as the same player.

I wish him well and am glad he at the very least got a decent contract from Southampton as if he is buggered as a player, that will give him a financial base to move on.
£12,000,000 ;)

When he played for us he always gave his all and for that l and no doubt many others will be eternally grateful. We looked after him when he was injured for the best part of a year. He then made a decision which he thought in his best interests. It was also a good deal for SAFC.

He is no longer a SAFC player. Wish him no harm but equally what he does from now on is of no real interest to me. I am more concerned with our current players and how they continue to perform and develop.

Let us hopefully get 3 points tomorrow v Cardiff tomorrow first then move on to Sheffield W on Friday and then we can attack a potentially tough looking October head on.

I said a while ago we could get 13 points from 5 games and see no reason to depart from that assessment.

Realistically too early to say. If he comes back the same player Southampton have got a good deal but there is just as much chance he comes back and has lost a yard of pace and isn’t quite the same player. If that happens we have done well to get out while we can with a good fee.
Even more chance he comes back and suffers another serious injury imo.

Once he gets up to speed he'll be a force in the Championship. Hopefully we'll be too worried about defending against Haaland to bothered about Stewart next season.

Good footballer, seems like a decent bloke, was the right move for him. Would be concerned about that Achilles and anything else that crops up, just read about Embleton.

The Saints' fanbase would have been hoping that Stewart would be available imminently considering he was signed earlier this month - but it doesn't look as though he will be in their starting lineup for a while still.

What a bizarre comment that is. Because he signed earlier this month, they’d hope he would be available straight away? Why?

Probably because we said he wouldn’t be ready until the end of pre-season, then we said September. Sounds like his recovery is being pushed further & further back.
Likely saints manager will get the bullet and the nee manager may not fancy him
Seen it before
Can’t see any manager at this level not fancying a fit Ross Stewart. The question fir everyone is if he’ll get fit again

He’s already Southamptons best defender
Southampton will be wanting this season to end soon before long.
It’s still very early days. They ll need to sack that manager though as they are literally wide open every week.

If he gets back to 100% he's the best forward in the league, but you can't turn down £10m in favour of 4 months of him and then losing him for nowt.
See I think it’s still too early in his Championship career to make a call like that. He was undoubtedly class for us when he was fit, but in his entire career he’s only played at Championship level 13 times. That’s nowt, you sometimes get flashes in the pan or one season wonders that fade after that and he could be one of them. It’ll be really interesting to see how it pans out for him when he’s back, and I’m quite relieved now after his injuries that I’ll be doing so casually without a vested interest.

You can be sure if they're saying he'll be back then that it will end up being longer also.

Given the fact they are struggling and fans are getting edgy whilst asking questions about where their £10m signing actually is, it is forcing things a bit.

It will probably be mid to end of November before he's fit and at that point it's around 18 games into the season.

I bet he doesn't play consistent minutes until at least after that November international break.
They'll bring him back before he's ready and finish him completely . It's what you do when you're desperate .

'Bullet dodged' just seems bitter tbh, he had a great record for us WHEN FIT, including important defending and hold up play as much as the goals, no point being in denial about that. However, the situation in terms of commitment and fitness was becoming more and more of a gamble and as a developing squad I think it was spot on that we chose to cash in while we could and sell that risk to someone else. 'Maybe' having a great striker waiting in the wings, was becoming more damaging than the certain knowledge we were short.

Harry Kane is prime example, the phrase was invented for him iirc

Can’t really mention them in the same book nevermind same sentence, though. I hate the cliches but couldn’t think of a better way of phrasing what I was trying to say, which imo is a fair comment considering before playing 13 Championship matches he’d only played in League One and the Scottish leagues, mostly outside of their top flight as well which is what, League 2 standard?
