Ross Stewart - unlucky? Or a bullet dodged?

I'm sure most fans were disappointed we lost him, but wish him well. I do. But it now seems his "return by the end of September" ETA was wide of the mark...this report puts his return back until the third week of October.
We aren't missing his goals at present and maybe the deal for good money suits us more than them...or indeed Ross himself.

.. Neither. We got good money though most were sorry to see him go .. Either way, we move on. He's gone and the team is doing well. .

We paid £350,000 for him and got £10,000,000 and he played a huge role in us going up a level.

Thats what I call a great buy in the first place and a cracking sell, given nobody knows whether he can return from the injury as the same player.

I wish him well and am glad he at the very least got a decent contract from Southampton as if he is buggered as a player, that will give him a financial base to move on.

Wish him no ill will (unlike some of the mercenaries who we’ve had, who’ve left), I think it was the right decision for club and player to let him go.

It was a big fee for a player who was injured and who nobody has any idea if his recovery will see him back to his best.

Not sure what I’d think if we’d paid £9million for a player in the same situation.
Sums it up. 👍
Where’ve yer been Janey?

Good business by the club IMO. What was the fee we ended up getting for him again?

Hopefully the lad recovers and gets back to scoring regularly, just not against us.

Lost interest in him once it became clear he wasn't going to sign a new contract no matter what was on offer. Don't wish him any ill but hope he has two left feet when we next play southampton

At 8 million quid, I'd have sold him as well, no questions asked.

'Great piece of business for SAFC, been out for the best part of year, a history of injury problems.

You cannot attempt to rely on a player who is unreliable in terms of his injury record, and you know he has a decent chance of breaking down in any match.

If he gets back to 100% he's the best forward in the league, but you can't turn down £10m in favour of 4 months of him and then losing him for nowt.

This sums it up really.

I think he is a brilliant all-round forward: a good target man, good at linking the play, a huge threat in behind, good in the air, can mix it with defenders. He was a great signing.

But there were two factors: 1. the injury. You would hope that he would return the same player, but not a guarantee. 2. He wasn't going to sign a new contract. And that was always the decisive one... it's not easy as supporters always but our recruitment has generally been pretty good, if we can use that money to sign players we wouldn't have been able to sign otherwise, then it's a no-brainer. He's a really good player I think that kind of money, we couldn't refuse, especially once it was clear he would be leaving on a free in the summer.

I'd rather have kept him, I wouldn't go as far as saying it's a bullet dodged as he is an excellent player and may return to that form. But hopefully we won't miss him too much.

I’m convinced he’s injury prone, he came to us with a back injury. We possibly just got his “best season” and managed to cash in.

Southampton look like they’re making a lot of mistake and potentially wasting their chance of being a yoyo.

Dodged a massive bullet Bill, purely on the grounds he did not want to be here and from a long way out as well. I really didn't get all this palaver about he wants to say, as he clearly didn't.
The club is in a win, win when you consider we paid him at the lowest rate possible prior to him leaving.
His agent must have been an absolute muppet for not encouraging him to sign a new contract, as he still could have left anyway, but would probably have been at least £1,000,000 better off.

If I’m brutally honest as a Sunderland fan wanting us to go up the longer he is injured the better as it weakens the opposition. At some point he will come back and do well so a hefty gap may help

I fear the lad will never recover from this. Was always injury prone before it, but this is a big injury and it’s clear he hasn’t recovered as quickly as expected. I wish him a good career, but I fear he’s fucked for the rest of it now

I’ve read this a fair few times and I really don’t get it. There’s absolutely no way we know if Stewart is the best in the league.

For all we know those 13 games for us could be the exception rather than the rule. How many players have had purple patches over the years.

On this very forum we had people saying Akpom was shit, and his FULL season was a fluke, last year. Despite him playing his full career at a higher level than Stewart.

But Ross Stewart who’s played all of 13 games above league one level is the best striker in the championship, Haway man.

For reference I was a huge LND fan, and was a huge critic of us letting him go. But now the dust has settled I can see the logic in it. However To say he’s the best in the championship, because of 13 games is frankly mental.
