Ross Stewart - unlucky? Or a bullet dodged?

I don’t think we had any choice and we got some reasonable money.

If, and it’s a big if, he comes back and plays like he can, keeping him might have been the difference between going up and not. We’re scoring goals but you still have the feeling not having a proven goal scoring striker remains a large gap for us.

one think I'd be wary of if kept him is that the 2 injuries suffered last season were non contact ones, ie one at Boro was warming up, one at Fulham, just fell to ground, imagine that tackle Costello did on Jack Clarke other night on Stewart, put him out for a year.
He’d been carrying a no contact injury all of the previous season as well
You can be sure if they're saying he'll be back then that it will end up being longer also.

Given the fact they are struggling and fans are getting edgy whilst asking questions about where their £10m signing actually is, it is forcing things a bit.

It will probably be mid to end of November before he's fit and at that point it's around 18 games into the season.

I bet he doesn't play consistent minutes until at least after that November international break.
Xmas-NY hols to be his first 90 mins I reckon.

I'm sure most fans were disappointed we lost him, but wish him well. I do. But it now seems his "return by the end of September" ETA was wide of the mark...this report puts his return back until the third week of October.
We aren't missing his goals at present and maybe the deal for good money suits us more than them...or indeed Ross himself.

I think Stewart will be genuinely worried about his future. He had two injuries sustained in the most innocuous of fashions which in total will have kept him out of nearly a year. Psychologically he will be affected but equally he must be worried about when the next injury will occur. Many strikers of a similar build to Stewart, i.e. tall, long limbed, such as Carroll, Ferguson or Mark Hateley had the latter stages of their careers decimated by recurrent injuries and I think, had he stayed, we would be worried about a repeat of that pattern. While in no way wishing that upon Ross, who was great for us, there is a chance that we've seen the best of him.

My thinking is very short term but by keeping Ross, we wouldn’t have had the players in that we had. That constitutes about a quarter of the season (until he is up and running). It seems to me we have moved on quickly so I would say it is already proven to be a good move for all - and I do mean all because I think Southampton have sufficient means to be patient for Ross’s return.
For sure. It’s a good decision at this point. Just mean imagine if he comes back, bags 15 in 15, fires them up and we can’t score a goal.

We might think maybe we wish we’d just kept him for the year

It’ll be more than a year. Boro away was 5th September. It’ll be December before he starts a game.
How do injured players pass medicals anyway
It’s not to check if they’re ‘injured’. It’s to detect underlying problems.

Good deal for us
Good deal for Stewart

Massive risk for Southampton though, he’d not have played for 10 months by the time he’s available and will be expected to score a load of goals from the off with how much money they paid.

Martin could be sacked by then too if they continue their poor form.
Ross Stewart was wonderful, brave and talented for us. He will be missed and the very best of luck to him in his rehabilitation. Those who carp and criticise have no class in my opinion.
Are there many criticising him? Think most wish him well but know it’s a brilliant deal.

Similarly, you could say anyone bad mouthing the club for accepting the offer are idiots.

He came back from that ...scored a lot of goals and was injured again in the New Year away at Fulham.

Yeah… that’s fair WB. All things being equal, I would have loved Ross to have stayed. But overall, I thought it was a good move for all.

I do think he will come back well (and I very much hope for that - for him personally and also for us financially). From my limited understanding, the Achilles injury is very much an impact one - the Achilles is very tough to snap, and of course is very nasty when it does. But given the lads professionalism I do think he will come back well, and I am sure his medical would have confirmed that.

Cheers!

It depends. He 's got a serious injury and some players dont come back as strong from these injuries. In that case we've dodged a bullet.

Otherwise, he is the kind of player that allows us to play a different style of football if needed. Sometimes when the opposition fills the box we just cant break them down and Stewart would give us the option to do something different.

I agree it’s a good deal for us. As soon as he obviously wasn’t going to sign (forget what we were offering) then our job was to get the best money in my opinion. We got more than i thought we would

Always like him, hard worker. Wish him the best apart from at our expense.

I do have reservations about his ability at the top level tbh. Hope he gets the chance to prove me wrong

That write up says Southampton hope to have him fit against Stoke away on October 21st. We play Stoke away that day! Oh the irony…..
