Plus promotion uplift but still won't be compatible to strikers higher up the league.

No idea if he had an uplift, to the best of my knowledge he is on 3k or below. You'll have Clarke, ballard and co on a lot more and top championship strikers on the best part of 10 times that. Its a massive disparity as it stands imo and needs sorting quickly.

I almost always believe that once you signing something you should stick to it, but I think this is a special case. I'm not suggesting we pay the top wage of course but we have to recognise his importance within squad.

Could be entirely wrong and he is happy enough to see out the contract but I wouldn't.

Needs selling if he isn't interested in extending (not saying he isn't btw).
Thats why he'll sign and not risk it over 2 seasons but hes trying to nudge it up a bit first while hes on fire .

He could have signed it last week and not risked it though. If you are basing decisons on possible injury there's no benefit to waiting (amd increasing likelyhood of injury).

Hes entitled to the reward for his work same as anyone existing contract or not . If hes the best in the championship pay him as such maybe structure it towards goals and win bonuses though

We can't compete financially with the top or dafter clubs, nor should we imo. The league is barmy financially or at least has been, competing on its terms would leave to ruin or at least not self sustainability.

The deal hasn't been done because it's a bit of a stalemate. We have the option, but he knows the longer we wait the more expensive he gets.

Fwiw, I think he'll sign one fairly soon and we'll still look to sell him in the summer. He'll know that if a big bid comes in he can force a move. And we'll know it, so may wonder - why extend, unless we get lots of years to drive up his price.

There are so many variables and the fact it's clearly not affecting him on pitch means they aren't hugely incentivised to get the ink out. On either side.

Fine line

Either he's scared of a leg break or he isn't tbf. Most likely he's keeping options open, isn't too fussed about being here or the wage we are offering isn't what he feels he is worth. We've no idea whara getting to him through his agent either.

I can understand him not signing in league 1 but getting to stage now it' either sign or nick off as in summer he will have a max of 1 year left and it'a selling for a reduced fee time. No deal by Jan and he may well go then.

I think he will sign personally though all that said.

He's got his big move to us with regards to where he's came from. He looks like he enjoys playing for us and hopefully will sign a new deal that suits all.

He could move to a Prem club or high end Championship, but will he get the game time that he wants?

Stay with us and become a legend as he certainly has all the attributes.
Players aren’t bothered about becoming legends at clubs anymore, to a man they chase the money.

Stewart will want the opportunity to test himself at the highest level in his prime years and to earn significantly more than the highest sustainable wage that we could offer him in the next few years.
That we've been negotiating a new contract with him since Spring speaks volumes.
On currently form his resale value will probably peak in January then his sustainable asset value will reduce as he runs his contract down.

I would agree but he shows no signs of being disgruntled, maybe seeing where we are in January is the best course?

Jan makes most sense. Fee will most likely decline from then. Will have been almost a year of negotiations as well.

Also of course will give a clearer indication of where we are in the league. Being mid table and almost safe makes a sale a little easier.

In January he will still have 18 months to run and be 26 years of age. If his form continues his stock will still be on the rise and should we not be promoted that will be point at which the largest return would be. As an aside I fully expect him to sign a new contract at the end of the year, if his form holds we’ll have a fair chance of promotion and he could get PL football and wages with us.

Top 10 and it becomes foggier. Thats heavily weighted on clubs best interests though, not the lads, short career, form of his life, he needs that uplift far sooner than later.

Given our current model. A lot of our fans are in for a shock next summer
Nonsense. The vast majority of our fans can see what’s going on and fully understand it. We will sell 2 or 3 of our better players for a decent profit, and any loan players will return to their parent clubs. We will bring in another 5 or 6 young players and a couple of loan players to backfill them. There’s no shock involved.

How long does it take to agree a contract ffs. Since spring? Seems like somethings going wrong if it’s took that long without a resolution.
Perhaps they started in spring but the transfer window has been a higher priority than a lad with two years left on his deal.
