It was in the response to the claim that he doesn't perform in high pressure games.
Ah right. High pressure club games though, not international ones.

Jimmy Greave's goals to games ratio is far more impressive - 44 goals in 57 games!
Forgot about Greaves TBH. Good reminder for me.

You can pick any record apart in a general sense but Charlton when it mattered scored two in a World Cup semi in a 2-1 win, besides a stupendous goal in one of the group games.
He also came to the table in a European Cup Final scoring 2 good goals.
He actually started for England on the left wing before being converted as they said in those days to a deep lying centre forward, but he was essentially a central midfielder, his goal scoring record for both country and club is quite remarkable when you consider what position he was playing.
I'm not slagging Rooney though, he's another who's goal scoring record for club and country is tremendous because lets face it he has been switched around a lot position wise,he just hasn't cut it in the major tournaments.

Yes Bobby takes it for that World cup but he didn't do much in any other major tournament final and Rooney has scored as well in a CL final...........

And Rooney was brilliant as a 18 year old in Euro 2004 before he got injured but since then hes hardly been blessed with luck has he..........
2006 he broke his foot and despite trying it all he didn't appear until halfway through the second game and was clearly unfit..
2008 thanks to the wally we didn't qualify
2010 the entire side was crap
2012 he missed the first two games through suspension but still scored in the third
2014 he scored one and made the other of our two goals............

Did you know though since his England debut Michael Carrick has missed more England games than any other player ..116 between his first and last cap................

Owen would have smashed it out of sight but for injuries.........

aye his record is still very good, considering from what 27 ? he stopped playing for England regularly.

You're preaching partly to the converted mate, i'm certainly not of the hate Rooney brigade. That 18 year old in Euro 2004 though was a much more dynamic and explosive player than now though. For some reason he lost a lot of that quite a while ago.

He had 35 goals for his country before the age of 26................only played a handful of games after that really.......

aye shame really, his speed off the mark with his knackered hamstrings curtailed his career. Great player IMHO,

People will have their own stance and thats fine but Charlton wasnt an out and out striker, he mainly played from midfield, and the abundance of woeful international teams nowadays means that IMHO Rooney played, far more games against inferior opposition.

I do remember England at that time playing the likes of Cyprus who were hopeless and the likes of Bolivia but overwhelmingly his games will have been against far better opposition than San Marino, Slovakia, Slovenia, Montenegro etc.

A lot of Charlton's games will I imagine have been played in the end of season home internationals but the standard of the Wales, N Ireland and Scotland team was much higher than it is now.

I'm amazed that Rooney has scored so many goals given the fact of how shite we have done in the finals of tournaments. IMHO it shows just how many meaningless qualifying games we play against shite. In Charlton's days the WC qualifying groups would have 3 or 4 teams in it maximum and most of the teams were pretty good. Remember there were only 16 teams qualified for say the WC finals in Charlton's days.

Now we are in groups of 5 or 6 teams and most of them are shit. A case in point is our current group for the EC finals in France. It is now designed for the so called top teams to qualify, not fail.
He's outscored Charlton in the euro's but Charlton obviously has the superior world cup tally.

Two great players.

Lifestyle and desire, which is what also contributes to his 'bad luck' with injuries.

Playets who develop as a man in their teens reap the benefits of it but it tends to catch up with them physically...it wrecked Whiteside by about age 28.

There's a reason two of the best players of all time were dwarves...

Could of been so much better had he put in some work at the gym and got into peak condition like Ronaldo
