Rooney...

2004 he was phenomenal

2006 World Cup he was dead.

shame McClaren was in charge in 07/08 when he was playing his best football, he was up there with Ronaldo back then one kicked on to the next level one never did

There was a time where he could/should have been dropped, he's not invincible. And he wouldn't have a sniff.

Very good player, never lived up to the hype of when he was a teenager.

Pretty sure he's been voted in the FIFA World XI in recent times. Anyway all about opinions, I would have him in mine any day of the week.

You don't get much for £300K a week these days do you?

Outrageous.........but compared to some donkeys that are stealing a living from playing football these days, he's probably fairly paid considering his achievements in the game.

Peter Crouch: 22 goals in 42 games. Extrapolated over 100 games he'd be six ahead of Rooney.

Fair play, Rooney has been a decent servant for England but failed to live up to his initial promise.

Played up front, he would have been a lot more effective. As shown by his two poachers goals last night.
Just to humour you with this - how many games did Crouch play out on the wing or behind the main striker?

Aye mate, let's rewrite history.
Which specific part are you referring to? He scored in a champions league final when Man Utd hardly had a touch of the ball. He settled a Manchester Derby with an amazing over-head kick against a multi-million pound side. He's performed in plenty more high pressure games. Alot of the time for England in tournament finals he's been surrounded by average players or has been injured or has had to play out of position or with negative tactics.

Crouch played as target man, a battering ram rather than an out and out goalscorer.

I've criticised in the past but he gives it everything everytime he plays for England and has the technical ability to go with it, gets a lot of stick but seems like a down to earth human being

His International career has been nothing to shout about. Continually falls short at tournaments. Most notably in South Africa when he was absolutely atrocious and should have been dropped. His club career has been up and down performance wise. He's the best English striker ATM but that's not saying much TBH.

Spot on. Posters are fickle as fuck on here - everything oscillates between legendary and worse than shit

He'll end up record caps holder and record goal scorer.

I thinks thats a lot to shout about tbh.

6. But considering he's played 17 tournament games, he was struggling with injury for a couple of the tournaments and he's been in a poor team with the exception of 2004, his record isn't that bad.

Rooney gets so much stick because he isn't Ronaldo or Messi and he hasn't won us a tournament single handedly.
I really rate Rooney and don't get the stick he gets. Just thought his record was crap in tournaments. As it happens it's not too bad.

Needs to get them in the qualifiers and friendlies as he won't get them once the real stuff starts at the finals.

Had a cracking game, but needs to turn up to a major tournament to avoid going down as a flat track bully.

He was unlucky at the world cup imo, scored one and made one, meaning he had a hand in both of the goals we managed to score. He wasnt great but he was better than the rest of them

When you should have been the best in the world by some distance, as he looked like he was going to be when he was 17, only being in the top three players in the world when you're in an advert with the other two is a disappointment.

The other issue is that the lack of progression is for the want of trying. He was absolutely terrifying when he burst onto the scene. Then he got used to the celebrity lifestyle and was made far too comfortable too early to have to worry about improving. Compare with Ronaldo, Messi and all his other peers who have a culture of learning throughout their career instilled in them. English lads are spoiled by money - that's the endgame for the vast majority of them.

He may end up holding all the records, but it's still a case of what might have been. Poor opposition and lack of real competition for his place at international level have made that look better than it is in reality, which I know is now second to the almighty god that is statistics.

When should he ever have been better than messi and ronaldo by some distance?

Was he fully fit in South Africa? True, he didn't perform particularly well in South Africa, but then again, neither did the majority of the team. The only recent player I'd say who has consistently delivered more than Rooney for England is Ashley Cole.
