Rooney retires from international football

why? I'd imagine playing for England is a massive ball ache and unless you are going to the big tournaments whats the point in carrying on

Because, in my opinion again, it shouldn't be something that a player decides. A lot of them do it for money reasons and a lot spit the dummy out because they don't get picked

People retiring from international football doesn't sit well with me. You should play if called up, Scholes did it ridiculously early.

Also, the timing suggests he's been told he's not in the squad so is 'retiring' to save face.

I agree for the most part but I didn't blame Scholes when he decided to wrap in. One of our most naturally talented players constantly pushed out to the left wing to accommodate the Gerrard / Lampard axis!

@PhilSAFC having just read his statement (I wasn't aware he'd made one) I'm happy to admit I'm wrong on this occasion, whilst he does say he wants to concentrate on playing for Everton I believe he is helping the future of English football by stepping down

Good for England, his record for England is padded out massively by goals in friendlies and qualifiers against the minnows. Hasn't produced for England on the big stage since he was 17/18.

Younger English players should retire from international football, have a great career at club level instead of chasing International glory with a sub par team. Absolutely stupid

Six tournament goals
Four of them in 2004.

To a point yeah. But englands all time top scorer and man united all time top scorer. Great career
Totally agree.

The comment was around people comparing him to others because everyone thought he had that potential - and we can all see he never maximised that potential.

England's greatest ever goalscorer.

He's making all the right decisions recently. Left United at the right time and went back to Everton rather than chasing a pay-day and now he's leaving the England scene to preserve his legs so he can play at a good level for a couple years at least with Everton.

I'd argue that relative to most people he did.

Gascoigne didn't. But Rooney is Man Utd and England's top scorer ever. He'd have taken that at 17!
