Rooney retires from international football

Superb player in his prime, no one could handle him.

Could have been. Rooney was the better player at the time, but life choices meant he didn't fulfil his potential. Great player tho

Disagree. He isnt a natural athlete like those two and was blessed with less skill. Yes he may not have lived exactly the same lifestyle as Ronaldo but they are made up differently. Rooney was mature for his age and was built like a boxer when he was only 15, hoying players off like they werent there. Ronaldo by comparison was immature for his age, with the body of a stick insect when he was 19. What made Rooney great from such a young age is also the thing that has worked against him in his latter years.

Shouldn't have been picked at the Euros. One of our better players undoubtedly although was dissapointing at tournaments. Probably best for all concerned to move on.

It's odd, he clearly has a fantastic record as England's leading goalscorer, it's going to be hard for anyone to match his level. Yet, I still can't help but feel indifference towards his international career because he underwhelmed at pretty much every single tournament he was in.

For 53 England goals, he scored just one of them across Three World Cups and only five others in European competitions.

Gets a lot more criticism than he deserves. Been a great servant to club and country his whole career and is retiring as England all time top scorer, not sure too many people can complain at that. Yes he didn't do it in major tournaments, but there's more to England than Wayne Rooney and the whole team failed to perform.

He was certainly doing it in his first major tournament until injury put an end to it.

His first Euros he was unstoppable.

Here is a statement from Wayne on his decision to retire form international football:

It was great Gareth Southgate called me this week to tell me he wanted me back in the England squad for the upcoming matches. I really appreciated that.

However, having already thought long and hard, I told Gareth that I had now decided to retire for good from international football.

It is a really tough decision and one I have discussed with my family, my manager at Everton and those closest to me.

Playing for England has always been special to me. Every time I was selected as a player or captain was a real privilege and I thank everyone who helped
me. But I believe now is the time to bow out.

Leaving Manchester United was a tough call but I know I made the right decision in coming home to Everton. Now I want to focus all my energies on helping them be successful.

I will always remain a passionate England fan. One of my very few regrets is not to have been part of a successful England tournament side. Hopefully the exciting players Gareth is bringing through can take that ambition further and I hope everyone will get behind the team.

One day the dream will come true and I look forward to being there as a fan – or in any capacity.

Great servant.

Hugely underrated because he wasn't as good as Messi and Ronaldo

This. Still scored some crackers.
If he hadn't gone to the tournament when he was injured he might have had 2 more years.
Well done, Wayne. Great servant to the country's team.
