Aye!!! Being a naive 14 year old at the time I just seen his goal record and thought he'd be the next Ian Rush.

Did we ever sign a Striker with our £10m after that deal fell through?

The little twat tried to get a large amount of compensation for not being signed too:

Sunderland could still sign Ronan Harazi - the man who is demanding a £600,000 pay-out from the club

The Beitar Jerusalem striker, who failed a medical at Roker Park in December after signing a four-year contract, has taken the case to FIFA, footballs governing body.Sunderland have been told by FIFA to contact the player to try and resolve the situation amicably. And, with Harazi claiming his injury problems have cleared up, the Wearsiders have not ruled out bringing him on board.Harazi said today: ``I have seen two top specialists and they assure me those injury problems are a thing of the past.``If Sunderland wanted to sign me but were worried about my medical history, I have the necessary documents to satisfy them.

Chris Waddle for £75,000.

No we didn't, but we were told we had £10m or so to spend and we'd already spent about £4.5m of it.

The next season, after relegation, we spent what must have amounted to the rest of the £10m on Makin, Craddock, Phillips, Clark, Byrne, Dichio and Zoetebier, so it was spent.

What about Ariel ortega

Never anything in it.

i could be totally imagining this but were we linked with a move for a very young player called zlatan ibrahimovic but reidy wasnt prepared to pay the asking price of £3.5m when he was playing in sweden or did i dream that ?

DUTCH giants Ajax have told Sunderland that striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic is not for sale.
And the Sweden frontman, who played for his country in this summer's World Cup finals, says he wants to stay with the Amsterdam club and play in the Champions League.

Sunderland boss Peter Reid was reported today to have turned his attentions to 6ft 4in Ibrahimovic after his swoop for Rangers' Tore Andre Flo looked set to fail.

According to the media in Scotland, the deal has hit a hitch after the Ibrox club upped their price to 8million.

Sunderland will not be drawn into public comments about their approach for Flo, but there is still a chance a deal could go through.

Rangers know Sunderland are desperate for a quality striker and Sunderland know Rangers have to sell before they can buy. Each side may be waiting for the other to crack.

With the August 31 transfer deadline now just 10 days away, time is running out for Reid to bolster his attack.

If he doesn't get someone in, then he faces the prospect of asking veteran Niall Quinn to again perform beyond the call of duty or throw rookie Kevin Kyle into the side.

According to some reports today, the Wearsiders had a 6million bid accepted for 20-year-old Swede Ibrahimovic.

But Ajax and the player say they're not interested in a deal.

Ibrahimovic, currently in Moscow preparing for Sweden's friendly against Russia tonight, said: "I'm not interested at the moment. I want to play in the Champions League with Ajax. That's better.

"I feel that I can develop at Ajax and that's important for my career.

"I feel happy in Amsterdam right now. I've spoken to the coach (Ronald Koeman) and he has promised me more time on the pitch. The Champions League is a big challenge and a great opportunity for me."

Meanwhile, both Ibrahimovic's agent, Anders Carlsson, and Ajax director Leo Beenhakker insisted no deal has been negotiated with Sunderland.

Former Holland coach Beenhakker said: "We have received bids from Sunderland, but the clubs have not come to an agreement.

"We don't want to sell Zlatan because the new season's just begun and we don't have time to start looking round ourselves for potential replacements."

It's the latest blow in a summer of transfer setbacks for Sunderland manager Reid, who played Kevin Phillips as a lone striker in Saturday's opening game of the season at Blackburn.

He agreed a fee with Leeds for Robbie Keane, but the Irishman didn't want to leave Elland Road. Eidur Gudjohnsen could not be tempted from Chelsea, the move for Flo has proved complicated and now Ibrahimovic appears a no-go.

Reid brought Rangers' Michael Mols to train on Wearside last week and the chance remains that he could be attracted to the Stadium of Light, having enjoyed his few days in the camp.

And we ended up with Flo...

That was later, when Ibrahimovic wasnt interested. At the time it was Jon Dahl Tomasson (40k a week!), Seb Rosenthal, Ronan Harazi we were continually linked with/didn't want to pay money or wages for.

Apparently though this never hit the headlines at the time, we also looked at Van Nistelrooy but Reid wasn't keen on the price as he was only 19, think he went for £3.5m and we weren't wanting to pay about £4.5m.
