The so called Udinese Model

My understanding is that this would mean bringing in young/youth players and developing them, then selling them on for great profits.

I'm all for the club generating high profits if it means that it will then be re-invested in the squad, however surely this would take years for us to see the benefits.

As a club that have just scraped through to stay up, have we got time to implement such a policy?

Re: The so called Udinese Model

Udinese didn't buy them particularly young, they bought cheap unknown players who came into the first team and had a huge immediate impact, and as a result were then sold for huge profit.

Dortmund did something similar and got the likes of Kagawa and Lewandowski for peanuts, as well as bringing through their own young'uns and, more recently, shelling out a bit for people like Reus.

I think the idea is that you get the best of both worlds.

Whether it works is another question...

Re: The so called Udinese Model

The so called Sunderland model has been to develop one good player every 10 years and a few average players which we sell to lower league teams for peanuts.

Re: The so called Udinese Model

Until we are in a position where we can challenge for honors (probs. not in my lifetime) it's a sensible way forward...

The 18 million we got for Henderson makes up for the last 10 years of shite tbf.

I dont think its so much signing 15/16 year olds and developing them, its more scouting and signing the unknowns and cheaper players from around the world who havent been snapped up yet and putting thme in the shop windown

Re: The so called Udinese Model

Arsenal are a selling club for god's sake..why are we so special.

Not comparing us to Arsenal, but they have taken massive steps backwards in becoming so

We won't be running the same model, it'll be similar in the fact we'll be signing signing unheralded players for bargain fees after they've been extensively scouted but for them to help us kick on, rather than mass producing youngsters to make a profit.

What do you mean, have we got the time? There is no deadline on this plan.

Re: The so called Udinese Model

We'd better find an Arab trillionaire then

Not really.

By signing 15 or more players each season, we are bound to unearth 2 or 3 quality gems.

Why not keep our best players each year, and build a team around them. In 4 or 5 years time we would have a squad good enough to compete for the top 6 if we had 8 or 9 real quality players.

It's sustainable and affordable, especially with the new TV deal likely to go up per capita each season now. Clubs like ourselves can flourish in this new era.

There's no reason to sell, if the offer isn't worth it.

As in time to focus on younger unknown players rather than building our horrendous first 11

They weren't signing only young players. They bought cheap players scouted properly of any age.

Re: The so called Udinese Model

Why can't we do both? Roberge, Diakite and Cabral are all in their mid-twenties, Ba and Watmore will be for the future.

Have we got the money to do both though?

Re: The so called Udinese Model

Neither do I marra, but unfortunately practically every club is a selling club.

Me and a mate were talking about this the other day, most clubs are just feeder clubs for the big boys these days, makes it a lot harder to build a strong team that can challenge for things doesnt it
