Re: Black and white Udinese team set to become Sunderland blueprint

That all sounds great but do Udinese have a fan base made up of impatient we want it all by now idiots who will hound everyone out at the first sign of trouble? :)

I think you will find Sunderland supporters don't want that much really. The one good thing about the club is the punters.

Re: Black and white Udinese team set to become Sunderland blueprint

Has anything been mentioned about the structure of training the youth team, or is that so last year now. It's ok saying we are going to buy cheap foreigners and turn them into chos players within a couple of years but our track record of promoting young uns is absolutely dire. Bearing in mind that the majority of signing will not amount to anything, then it is a very risky strategy . Lets hope PDC can sort the training and coaching out from bottom to top, if he can then hopefully we may see more youngsters coming through, if not then it could be a total disaster.

Re: Black and white Udinese team set to become Sunderland blueprint

Don't particularly like the idea of selling our best players but I can definitely see why Short wants to put a philosophy or a 'model' in place.

Our purchases have been pretty awful since we got back into the Premier League - we've overspent on average players with no sell on value - it's been mental the number of players we've signed each window and spunked £££s on wages as well!

The whole signing players from relegated sides kind of puzzles me as well. Each season sign two or three relegated players and then scratch our head when the team has a losing mentality

Since the transfer window of summer 2007, we have brought in 54 players and sold or released 74 players. We have paid out £173m (approx.) and received £98m (approx.), a difference of about £75m.

That means we have had an average net spend of £6.25m in each of the last 12 transfer windows, which does not seem so much in the grand scheme of things, particularly as it has contributed to SAFC sustaining an extended stay in the very lucrative Premier League.

By way of comparison, over the same period Stoke have signed 48 players and sold and released 54 players. The estimated cost of their purchases is around £103m and their receipts are an estimated £18m, a difference of about £85m

The 'churn' on players has been huge and has undoubtedly contributed to the lack of any consistently good performances. However, if the 'Udinese Model' is to be applied at SAFC, then we had better get used to the dressing-room having a revolving door.

Re: Black and white Udinese team set to become Sunderland blueprint

I think it's well worth the gamble. I would imagine we would keep a core of experienced players then look to add some younger players to the side / squad

We haveve been overpaying for players for years and there has to be better alternatives either abroad or in the lower leagues

This new scout has previous at Udinese and while we will be restricted by different Work Permit laws I'd guess we'll be able to pay more than Udinese. I'm quite excited about the whole thing as we've tried managers and set ups from this country and have been mostly shite so lets have a go at something different

I could see a few people complaining about spending half of the transfer budget on 10 youngsters who won't wear the Sunderland shirt for the next 2-3 years.

Re: Black and white Udinese team set to become Sunderland blueprint

So? He came with the money?

Eh? You were making a point about some supporters not being happy at the transfer budget being spent on kids who wouldnt be ready for the first team.

I read that at Udinese that he had his own budget to spend on players to develop that wasnt strictly part of the first teams transfer budget.

The budget will be split in two: one for his (wonder)kids, one for the first team. I said people will moan about spending money for kids (who would spend their next 2-3 years in Belgium probably), instead of using it on first team players.

I dont have a problem with it personally. Something had to change. If he can unearth a couple of unknown gems, then Id rather money be spent on that than continuing with our trend of paying premium sums for average players.
