[roker report] The "Udinese Model"

Re: Black and white Udinese team set to become Sunderland blueprint

There's a thread on this board of who the last player we signed from each club was, the more telling question would be who the last player we sold to each club was, because I don't think there's a single example of anyone going on to achieve anything since the premier league era began, indicating we are signing junk.

It seems there is wholesale change in how SAFC operate in the air, which seems like a good thing, but could also be a total disaster. My prediction for finishing position next season: 7th, 8th or 20th.

I haven't seen anything indicating De Fanti and Angeloni having actually signed anything with the club, is this an actually done deal or is there still time for Everton to sweep in at the last minute?

I think you'd be suprised, it would probably be a better list than who we've signed.

Of all the football clubs Sunderland had to be inspired by, it just had to be one with a black and white-striped strip.

That Udinese are Ellis Short's ideal model of how to run his own club should excite and genuinely encourage Sunderland supporters.

Their colours are best ignored.

better than basing our club model on Exeter or Brentford, which it has felt like in some eras

Henderson doing well, Bridges was flying in the champions league before the ACL tear ruined his career, Etuhu went on to play in a European cup final...

Re: Black and white Udinese team set to become Sunderland blueprint

One of the biggest problems as far as I understand it is that they don't have the same work permit laws as us, so we will not be able to play exactly the same game as Udinese - any targets from outside of Europe have to at least have already reached a certain level of success... unless we start to loan players out to other clubs in Europe. Was there a Belgian club that we have some sort of partnership with?

That would be the three in bold yes? Okay, I can admit when I'm wrong, our transfer policy is fine.

Re: Black and white Udinese team set to become Sunderland blueprint

That makes desperate reading.

At least there is more than a 'single example' from 21 yrs worth though! :)

Re: Black and white Udinese team set to become Sunderland blueprint

That all sounds great but do Udinese have a fan base made up of impatient we want it all by now idiots who will hound everyone out at the first sign of trouble? :)
So you're suggesting we were hasty in getting shot of last 3 managers?

Re: Black and white Udinese team set to become Sunderland blueprint

Why not change the "model" i mean the current one hasnt really been a raving success has it??

Well its going ok. Last season was almost a disaster, but this is the club's longest stretch in the top flight in my lifetime. Most peoples lifetimes in fact. That said, we could do a lot worse than emulate Udinese, shirt colours aside.

Re: Black and white Udinese team set to become Sunderland blueprint

It is worth bearing in mind that Udinese did, occasionally, decide to retain the services of some core players (for example, Di Natale and Jorgensen). Therefore, even under the 'Udinese model' there is no definite need to sell every player at the earliest opportunity for the first big fee being offered.

It is also worthy of note that the financial circumstances of the Premier League in 2013 are not the same as Serie A and Sunderland are not the same size club as Udinese (for example, their average attendance Serie A is 17k-18k).

I am hoping that if we are able to remodel our scouting system by adopting some of the systems and contacts that might be arriving, then the most significant advantage will be a footballing one rather than primarily a benefit to the balance sheet. Accountancy is never going to catch on as a spectator sport, in my opinion.

Re: Black and white Udinese team set to become Sunderland blueprint

this new model would be the one selling sess and mig would it not?.

Re: Black and white Udinese team set to become Sunderland blueprint

Don't particularly like the idea of selling our best players but I can definitely see why Short wants to put a philosophy or a 'model' in place.

Our purchases have been pretty awful since we got back into the Premier League - we've overspent on average players with no sell on value - it's been mental the number of players we've signed each window and spunked £££s on wages as well!

The whole signing players from relegated sides kind of puzzles me as well. Each season sign two or three relegated players and then scratch our head when the team has a losing mentality

Agreed.
Keep those we know are indisputably up to PL standard and move the ones who arent on asap. Especially those who dont provide value for money.
Mignolet, Cattermole, Johnson, Sessegnon, Fletcher should certainly stay alongside OShea, Colback and Alfie. Keep Westwood if Mignolet wants away anarl. Brown anarl if fit.
No reasonable offer should be refused for the rest. Yer likes of Bardsley, Cuellar, Gardner, Vaughan, Graham, Ji, Wickham, MacLean etc are just making up the numbers and can be replaced with cheaper and hungrier players quite easily.

Like everyone else on here Ive had just about enough of this 'coasting along from season to season attitude SAFC have been exhibiting for too long. Fuck it Im all for this militant mackem attitude to players attitudes.

Re: Black and white Udinese team set to become Sunderland blueprint

Well yes if the model was based on your tedious agenda

agenda:lol:,do you even know what udinese's blueprint was/is? since you failed to read the article before flapping your gums i will help you out-

"Angeloni, a former Sampdoria player, worked for four years at Udinese where he played a huge role in one of Italian football’s most successful transfer policies of recent times.

Actually, make that of all time.

He spotted young players few others had registered, bought them for buttons and after they were developed into established Serie A stars, sold them for a gigantic profit.

This is the way forward for a club such as Sunderland.

It certainly makes a hell of a lot more sense than spending millions of pounds on Championship players and then hoping they can come good.

Short has made it be known that he doesn’t believe he’s had his money’s worth so far in terms of the players signing during his tenure.

It is difficult to argue with that.

So the American is looking to spend sensibly, sell for big profit and win a few football games as well. That last part has not been forgotten.

try a little research before you post in future,eh:roll:

We've never really had a proper model before.
