Re: [roker report] Captain's Blog: At Bruce's Behest - Drawing My Own Gyan Conclusion

That is your opinion. I can respect and accept that, but I don't share it. Again, my problem with it is that greedy footballers is not a problem unique to SAFC but losing players to such strange seemingly purely greed-driven transfers apparently is.

A genuine, honest, and innocent expression of opinion. Disagreeing with it is fair game, but I don't see the need to repeatedly call my motives for having it into question.

Is it? Even the top clubs have lost players to greed, or it's counterpart "ambition", both have no limits. We're a relatively small club in Premiership terms and we'll continue to lose our best players. That's the reality of where we're at right now. Laying this at the club or Bruce's door is to ignore what's staring you in the face.

For me, I'd say that a belligerent refusal to even acknowledge the regularity of these things happening to SAFC is to ignore what is staring you in the face.

I have no problem with losing top players. Every club does it. Just the nature of the game. But I am struggling to think of another club in our position losing them to backwater leagues and losing them down the table. It is clear that Young and Downing wanted out of Villa, for example, but only when a progressive move that furthered their professional level were in the offering to a Champions League club or one with realistic aspirations to get there soon. Pretty clear that Modric wanted to go to Chelsea too, again a progressive career move. Arteta is another. There are plenty examples of such transfers.

Unfortunately, there aren't many at all examples of top players at a Premier League club leaving for money-grabbing alone whilst taking a backwards step. Ashley Cole is perhaps one, but even then Arsenal to Chelsea is hardly selling out. Kevin Nolan to West Ham another. Yet we are expected to believe this has innocently happened to Sunderland twice within 8 months? For me, personally, that is a bit of a stretch and at the very least should be acknowledged as an oddity.

Poncy use of big words mind. And there's a whiff of facts being selected tonsuit the argument there that Dylan Avery would be proud of. That's the trouble with tinternet though, everyone thinks they're a fackin Pulitzer contender

Kolo Toure, Adabyor (sp) and Robinio going to Man City when not even in champs league..

Yeah, that's a fair enough example. Leaving a Champions League club for one just aspiring to be there. Although Man City could still at least offer Premier League spotlight and realistic Champions League aspirations.

Robbie Keane is on 2.3 mil a year at LA Galaxy... said it was his dream moves though.... still he's not even getting half Becks is on. Footballing reasons.... ??

I think Robbie Keane isn't really comparable. He was very much on his way down in his career, unwanted at his club, and unable to get a similar offer elsewhere in a significant League. Just like the vast majority of players who go to the MLS really.

Still an example of people going to lesser league for more money...

Least Gyan had the decency to admit it was for money... even when bout two weeks ago when he first came out and said he was staying he was quick to point out that everyone in the club was good to him and that he owed us his service, or something like that.

Ferdinand has recently come out since leaving and thanks Bruce for helping develop him from a "boy into a man"..http://www.skysports.com/story/0,,11095_7178996,00.html?

If there was something wrong with the managers "man management" then player who left wouldn't be saying these things after they leave...

...players like Larrson, Cattermole, Bentdner, Bramble wouldn't be coming back to work with the manager again and saying he was a big reason in why they signed.

Bent and Gyan have left for nothing else but money imo...... call it bad luck or coincidence that they both left for "lesser" clubs. If twas other reason then we'd be quick to hear about it from the players themselves who would be keen to clear their names a bit.

But this isn't a case of saying that Bruce can't man-manage anyone so he is a shite manager. I am saying there is cause to suspect that Bruce can't manage top level players and so he is simply not the man to take us forward.

Well, I should say that it means he MAY not be the man to take us forward, really.

As far as I can tell Cana left because he wasn't playing well and hadn't really settled, it's not like he went to the mags or the boro, a complete change is a very big thing, regardless of profession.
Bent left because someone convinced him his international career would blossom if he moved.
And Gyan left for 200 big ones, good luck to the lad, he's only got one go round and that is one massive pay day, you better believe if the bastads could get a sniff at some of the other big name premier players they would be off for that money as well, but I believe and could be wrong, that some of the UK European based players are better protected from these types of predatory offers, or are playing for such a big club they wouldn't shift until they are passed it, kind of like Beckham.

Re: [roker report] Captain's Blog: At Bruce's Behest - Drawing My Own Gyan Conclusion

Perhaps you're right, although I get the feeling that the club weren't even prepared to negotiate or discuss the situation with the players.

Steed and Anton weren't player driven and not offering Gordon a new contract isn't player driven.

We're offloading our big earners, no doubt about it. What would be really interesting to see is if we've offered the new players decent wages to come here (obviously I expect us to have tried to cut our cloth somewhat) or if some of the players we've picked up were purely because we could get them cheap.
I'm pretty sure Steed was reported to be wanting any new contract to be longer than the club was prepared to offer due to his daughters being of school age.
